I took the MCSE Networking Essentials exam on February 18, 1998, and
passed with an 879 broken down as follows: Standards and Terminology 93%
Planning 93%
Implementation 69%
Troubleshooting 93%
I was very disappointed with my implementation score, but I still passed!
I used the Sybex books, Transcender tests, and this along with other braindump
sites. Here's what I remember:
Which Operating System has share level security? Check all that apply.
A. Windows 95
B. Windows NT Workstation
C. Windows NT Server
D. Windows for Workgroups
I picked A and D.
- Question about what is true about a client/server system. I picked
every computer can be a client as well as a server.
- Question about copying for an Ethernet to a Token ring, one direction
is quick, the other is slow(I wish I could remember which). Why?
- System with a SCSI hard drive and CD-ROM, why does the hard disk quit
working when a network card is put in, but begins working again when the
card is removed.
- What kind of network should be set up if the network is temporary,
has a small number of clients, and the building has no wiring. I picked
Bus.
- A network in a two floor building is dealing with broadcast storms.
. How would you prevent traffic from going to the floor it’s
not intended for. I chose Router.
- Questions about WINS server, DHCP, and problems that one can have,
or resolve with these.
- One was WINS Server is implemented, but cannot browse part of the network
using names. Why?
- Questions about which cable is appropriate.
- Question about terminators on a network. Showed a picture of a network
with 3 terminators.
- No wireless questions.
- Question about where protocols and hardware(gateways, routers, bridges)
fit in the OSI model. There was also an OSI question which showed a picture
of the OSI model.
- Picture of a network with three grounded terminators, one on each segment.
Figure out why not working properly.
- What provides reliable delivery even over unreliable switched connection?
- ISDN, X.25,Frame Relay, or ATM? (I didn’t know this one)
- Question about what protocol to use on a Windows 95 peer network. NetBeui
was not amongst the choice. I picked NWLINK IPX.
A lot of what I saw on the test is in other parts of this braindump site.
Good luck!
