Subject: Networking Essentials 70-058

Today I passes NE with 743 points(552 required)/25 questions. It is not as bad as it seems because NE is now computerized adaptive test(CAT) and it is certainly a different one in comparison with the standard test. You should definitely learn about it at Micro$oft's site.

My experience with it is quite good, for many reasons, and I would never go back again with the traditional test. First, you finish the test much faster, you are asked fewer questions and still you have more time per question. Second, it is not as boring as traditional test because the program that runs it dynamically estimates your knowledge and based upon that estimate you are prompted with an appropriate question. Easier one if you answered incorrectly and a harder one if opposite, and hence, it keeps you awake and concentrated by dismissing all the (easy) questions that you would answer anyway. That's why you get a fewer questions. Third, you pass and go home :).

Just for the record, the first exam that I passed was "70-64: Implementing&Supporting MS Windows 95" and it was somewhere in the middle of October(just over 50 days). Then, I passed "NT Server 4.0" with 909 points and "NT Server 4.0 in the Enterprise" with 921 points. I never failed a test so far, and I'll try to keep it that way.

Of course it's needless to say that this site is GREAT but, it has its downfalls. It's very possible that you will be able to pass the exam, without true understanding of the subject, just based on the Q&A presented here. That's no good. The ones that do that probably, in a long term, diminish the value of a certificate.

Finally, here are some questions, and respectively my answers, that I wrote down during the test:

1. You want to manage Windows NT Server computers on a remote subnets. All of these
servers are configured in a single NT domain. You want to use User Manager & Server Manager
to manage the remote servers. What should you install and configure to resolve the computer names
of the servers ? (chose 2)

a. DNS server
b. DHCP server
c. WINS server
d. LMHOST file
e. RAS server

I chose C&D and made a mistake(it was my very first question) because I figured that a managing computer is a member of domain and thus connected to it permanently. Now I realize that I was wrong. Computers that have to be managed are on REMOTE subnets. I would now probably chose B&E because you need to install RAS server on a member server in a domain and configure DHCP service on it which will then provide a client with an IP address, default gateway, subnet mask and (if configured) with an IP address of WINS server. D&E would also work here.

2. What is an advantage of Category 3 UTP cable instead of RG-58 /U coaxial cable.

a. CAT 3 UTP cable supports higher bandwidth than RG-58 /U coaxial cable.
b. UTP cable supports longer cable segments.
c. UTP cable is less susceptible to electrical interference than RG-58 /U coaxial cable.
d. UTP cable is easier to install than RG-58 /U coaxial cable.

D.

3. You must explain file-and-print servers and application servers to a customer. (chose 2)

a. Application servers are used to validate user logons to a network.
b. Both file-and-print and application servers can store date.
c. Application servers run both the server portion and the client portion of an application.
d. The entire contents of a data file are transferred over the network when a client
computer accesses the data file on a file-and-print servers.

I chose B&D. C is definitely wrong and A is true(remember NetLogon service?) but I wouldn't tell that to a customer.

4. Your network has 10 servers and 150 clients equally divided among servers. The only protocol in use is NetBEUI.
You add 150 new clients. What should you do to improve network performance ?

a. Reconfigure all computers to use TCP/IP as their only protocol.
b. Install a second Ethernet adapter in each server.
c. Segment the network by installing a router.
d. Segment the network by installing a bridge.

D. You must install a bridge because the NetBEUI protocol is not routable and hence various segments would not be
able to communicate.

5. You have a SCSI hard disk and it is formatted so that it has 2 primary partitions. First partition is marked as active.
You want to implement maximum security on your disk. How should you do that ?

a. Both FAT
b. Both NTFS
c. First FAT and second NTFS
d. First NTFS and second FAT

B. You can boot from an NTFS partition.

6. You want to upgrade your network performance. Currently, backbone of your network runs at 100Mbps.
Which WAN technology should you implement ?

a. Ethernet
b. Token Ring
c. FDDI
d. X.25
e. ATM

E.
** FDDI is a high-speed LAN that runs at 100MBbps.
You need to upgrade your network performance so, the answer must be ATM.

7. You want to incur the least possible installation costs. Which topology you use ?

a. star
b. bus
c. ring
d. mesh

I chose B but I am not 100% sure. Star topology would require hubs and they are expensive. If I'm not mistaken ring topology should be cheap as well.

8. You want to install a 100Mbps backbone network that will connect 5 existing networks.
Which media should you use ?

a. Category 3 UTP cable
b. Category 4 UTP cable
c. Fiber-optic
d. RG-58 A/U coax cable

C.

9. Client uses NWLink IPX. The client computer is NOT able to access any network resources. After investigation,
you decide that hardware is NOT causing the problem. What is probable cause of the problem ?

a. Incorrect subnet mask on the client computer.
b. Incorrect IP address on the client computer.
c. Incorrect frame type on the client computer.
d. Corrupted WIN.INI file on the client computer.

I chose C but, if B should be the case you also would NOT be able to access network resources...

10. Which WAN connection service can provide transmission speed that is faster than 100Mbps ?

a. ISDN basic rate
b. X.25
c. T1
d. ATM

D.

11. You want to connect your Ethernet and token-ring networks. Both networks use NWLink IPX. You want to use IPX addressing to limit the amount of traffic between the two networks. Which device should you use ?

a. Repeater
b. Bridge
c. Router
d. Gateway

C.

---------------------------------------------------------------

This is everything that I wrote down and the rest was lost the moment I finished the CAT. I remember though, that I got a couple of questions that included NT servers, domains etc. On the other hand, there were no questions about IRQ settings, OSI layers and wireless networking.

I apologize on a bad language because English is not my native...
