Hey there all, just passed my networking essentials exam on Monday

(sept. 14,98) with a 948/1000. All I reallly have to say about this exam

is that it is a joke.

I would like to thank briandumps and visualmcp (both are invaluable) All

the questions covered were in christina's entry for this month and at

LEARN THIS

1- OSI LAYER

one nmenonic you could use

ALL PEOPLE SHOULD TRY NEW DIET PEPSI.

(found this one easier to remember)

- what each layer does

- where the protocols fit inside each layer

- the devices

( this should cover about 50 - 70% of the exam know them like the back

of your hand)

2 DEVICES

- LEARN ALL THE CONNECTING DEVICES AND WHAT THEY ARE USED FOR.

GATEWAY translate protocols, works at all layers of the osi, but

usually associated with the APPLICATION LAYER.

ROUTER. routes packets when they are multiply paths, segments networks,

resolves broadcast storms. (mesh topology) DOES NOT ROUTE NETBEUI, DLC,

AND LAT (non routeable protocols)

BRIDGE segment networks, does not distinguish from protocols,

REPEATERS used to extend the network passes everything that goes

through them. can not resolve broadcast storms.

3 CABLING

- THIS IS A MUST IF YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO EFFECTIVELY ANSWER THE

'SCENARIO' QUESTIONS

10BASET/100BASEX 100M/328FT use UTP/STP cabling and RG45

connectors

10base2 (thinnet) 185M/607ft use RG58 A/U cabling

(note: RG58 /U cable is not compatible) use barrel and T BNC connectors

10base5 (thicknet/standard ethernet) 500M/1640ft coax cabling

used in backbone use DIX/AUI connectors ( apple puters use the same)

FIBER OPTIC 2KM/1.2miles could extend for 10KM's without

repeaters... USED TO CONNECT TWO BUILDING!

ALSO: I would like to point out that there is alot of mistakes here in

the braindumps and you should not take everything as fact. If you are

unsure of the answers supplied here REVIEW them.

Well I am off to study for my NT 4.0 Workstation. (easier than Win95)

ps. you really should take this exam first, and if you fail it give it

up. cause in my mind you are an idiot. or not dedicated enough to become

an MCSE.
