Sat the Networking Essentials (70-058) on Thursday 5th February.
Got a score of 896\1000.
For study purposes I used the Sybex Networking Essentials, Microsoft
SSK and the Transender Exams and of course the odd brain dump from this
site of course. All were most valuable.
The Microsoft SSK I found to be quite full on at times but it was a rather
valuable resource. The exam only took me about 30 minutes to complete but after I finished I went back over the
exam again and made any adjustments. Still finished with about 20
mins to spare.
Following is some of the main questions which I was asked. I noted
this information down during my 10 minutes to evaluate the exam I had just
done.
- One thing that really help was: "All People Seam To Need Data
Processing" and "go pas four Gateways, Route over the Bridge
and Repeat"
- Know incompatible cable types do not work in a coaxial network. ie.
RG 58 /U vs RG 58 A/U
- Know that if you are using Nwlink as your protocol that you must have
the same Frame Type. 2 Questions on that.
- Remember that if you have 2 network cards on the same network with
the same MAC address you which not have Coms. Upgrading to and Ethernet
Switch can increase networking performance.
- Question regarding protocol mismatches between
Windows '95, NT and Unix computers
- Four questions regarding the Protocol Analyser.
- One question regarding your network card is configured to use IRQ 3
so it conflicts with COM 2.
- Note that you can use Striping with Parity to speed up disk access.
Question regarding heaps of broadcasts on the network which was using NetBEUI.
- Answer: Replace NetBEUI with TCP\IP and segment the network.
- Few questions regarding the wrong Transceiver Settings on the NIC.
I had 9 questions in total regarding the Proposed Solution, Required solution
etc. All have been covered in previous brain dumps such as the NetBIOS
naming schemes, 3 T1 links etc
- Know what is the purpose of NDIS and ODI - 2 questions
- Remember that Windows '95 has share level access while NT has user
level - 2 questions on this
- What are characteristics of 802.3 10 Base2. ie. BNC T connectors,
Coax cable
- What are characteristics of 802.3 10 BaseT. ie. UTP cable, RJ-45
- What type of server does all the processing on it - Applications server
- What are some dial up protocols - PPP and SLIP
- What is connection orientated communication - assured delivery
- What is required in a UNC name - Share name and Computer name
- Characteristics of a client\server network
- What does RIP do
- Question regarding a MESH network - showed you a diagram and you had
to say what type of network it is
- Know that you can use a repeater to extend the distance of a network
segment
- Know that you can use Fibre Optic cable as a back bone for greater
than 100 MB
- What is a good peer to peer network protocol - Nwlink 2 x ATM
questions
- What is ISDN going to replace - Analogue phone lines
- What cable can transmit at 100 MB - Cat 5
- Define Crosstalk
- What protocols are Routable
For me that was exam number four out of the way. I'm now onto TCP\IP
on NT 4.0 and Exchange Server 5.0 which I hope to knock over in about a
month.
I do plan to do both at the same time so if you can give me any tips, knowledge
or strategic approaches regarding doing both these exams at the same time
please drop me a line.
