Subject: Net Essentials feedback

I passed the Networking Essentials exam yesterday with an 862. This was my first MCSE test. If you're new to the Brain Dump site, this is the key to passing your exam. I read both the MS-Press and New Riders Net Essentials, Test Prep by Que and the Exam Cram books and then printed all the questions I could find on Brain Dump. I also took the Transcender tests and was passing with 98's and 100's before taking the exam. I spent approx. 8 weeks preparing.

Below are some questions I had on the exam........................

Had 12 questions of the here's the solution does it meet the requirement and the optional requirements......

--You are up to 70% and you need to reduce it by 50%. One of these suggested fiddling with TCP windows and reducing packet sizes. I had seen this on Brain Dump but never was able to find a definitve answer.

--One was changing protocols and making Brouters into routers. Simple enough.

--One was making the whole network FDDI. What i found was odd was the wording where it said it wanted to reduce

UTILIZATION and after the proposed solution keep the utilizations low. I hadn't seen that either.

There were 2 or 3 questions on OSI layers.

Two or three on the connecting three cities with t-1 lines scenario.

About 6 or 7 questions on Bridging, Routing & gateways

Broadcast storms - what would you need

Ethernet LAN to IBM Mainframe - what would you use -gateway

One each on IRQ/MAC address questions i.e. Two identical LAN cards don't work - what needs changing (they specifically give the MAC address)

There were only a couple of WAN questions

Had a scenario or two on termination, cabling problems where they gave ohm and oscilliscope readings and asked what the problem could be.

Know OSI layers, IRQ's and user-level and share-level because there were 3 or 4 questions on file security.

Also, know UPS, backups and RAID levels 'cause there are 2 or three scenario questions on physical security and disaster recovery.

That's about all I ran into; all in all a fairly simple exam if you are prepared. USE THIS WEB SITE for information.

For me, it really helped by seeing what others had experienced. Thanks to all who contribute here!
