Networking Essentials Braindump (Exam 70-058) This was a very difficult exam. I managed to score 862 using the Sybex book and Transcender tests. You need more than just the Sybex book. It covers alot, but not everything you need to know. I can't speak for the other books as this was the only book I used, but the Transcender tests are a MUST!!

I had the typical WAN connection scenarios. You need to know how much data each WAN connection can provide. ie: T1 = 1.544Mbps, ISDN = 56Kbps, etc.

Need to know the abilities of routers, bridges, brouters and gateways.

One question on connection and connectionless oriented.

I think all my "What device would you use to ______?" answers seemed to be protocol analyzer.

Two scenarios where you need to reduce network utilization by 50%. The situation was 600 Win95 clients, 700 Mac clients, 11 Servers using Netbeui and TCP/IP with brouters and UTP Cat3 cable. The one proposed solution was to disable bridging function of the brouter and configure the Win95 clients to use only TCP/IP and implement UTP Cat5 cable. The second question's proposed solution was to change packet size, TCP window size and some other things.

One question on a high-level network protocol with about 10 choices for answers.

The only question I had about the OSI model was "Which device resides in the network layer?" router

The very first question was "Your network uses NetBeui and NWLink protocols. What device do you use to segment the network?" Brouter was NOT a choice. I chose bridge because NetBeui is not routable.

One question where you need to network five Win95 machines. Which protocol to use? NetBeui was not as choice so I chose NWlink.

One question on setting up a temporary network for six months and the lease states that you cannot put the cable in the walls. What topology do you use? Bus

I did not have any questions on mesh topology.

Know your Ethernet rules: termination, grounding, distance of segments and number of nodes.

Know the 802.3 and 802.5

I didn't see any questions where they tried to trick you. Just read every detail carefully and take your time. Mark all questions you are unsure of and go back at the end and review those questions. Your answer may come from other questions you may have had. I finished the test with 20 minutes left and took ten minutes to review my marked questions and I ended up changing 2 of my answers. The questions seem to make more sense when you know you have plenty of time left.

Good Luck!!!
