Subject: Networking Essentials 70-58 braindump...
Passed my Networking Essentials Exam on July 10 1998
Scored 965 that means I got just 2 incorrect...
Ok here are some important points to remember when giving exams....
1.I had 3 questions on Protocol analyzer(Network Analyzer)
Remember that a PA can monitor the network at the packet level..... The other devices TDM, Oscilloscope and DVm are used to measure faults in the cable, A P.A can be used to find the source of broadcast storms.
Network Monitor can monitor packets on the current machine..version on NM in BackOffice can analyze net traffic on remote computer.
Perfomance monitor used to measure performance of local machine..
2. I had to consecutive questions on NWLink IPX/SPX....
The answer to both was incorrect frame settings....
If you don't have a incorrect frame type try wrong tranciever type..
If the network software initializes properly then the drivers , IRO etc are all correct..
3. I got 8 sceanrios....
a) Three cites connected by 3 T1 lines in a triangle...
b) Three cities conected by 2 T1 lines....
Remember that in the triangle configuration even if one link goes down the computers can still communicate at 1 mbps...but no in the case where u are using 2 T1 lines....
c) NETBIOS naming scenarios.....
Using e-mail addresses
Using hexadecimal....(Hexadecimal is a valid choice for NETBIOS names if under 15 charcters are used )
A Hexadecimal naming system is valid but does not make any sense...
d) Trouble shooting scenarios....
To improve network perfomance to 50 %
Remember that an Ethernet switch is an Intelligent hub...So it does improve network performance
Also remember that Changing the frame size and changing the sliding window does not improve network utilization.
Hint: If you see that the required is not met ... most questions have option D for does not meet requirements.
4) Know ur IRQ's
IRQ 3 : COM 2,COM 4
IRQ 4 : COM 1, COM3
IRQ 5 (Default for NIC) : Sound card / LPT2 / NIC
IRQ 6 : Floppy Disk Controller
IRQ 7 : LPT1
5) Know at which level the various devices function...
Repeater : Physical
Bridge : Data Link (Used when Protocols are the same )
Router : Network ( Used when there are Different protocols )
Gateway : Any layer depending on where translation is needed...
6) Know which protocols are routable ( TCP/IP ,IPX/SPX , AppleTalk) and which are non-routable (DLC,NetBeui)
7) Since NetBEUI is non-routable if u want to segement a network that uses this protocol use a bridge.
8) If there is a combination of other protocols with NetBeui the use brouter..
9) Note that only routers can filter broadcasts..Bridges cannot... So if u have a netBeui network with Stroms switch to TCP/IP and use routers...
10) For WAN links when in doubt use ATM
11) Basic rate ISDN is going to replace Analog telephone...
12 ) Fucntions and advantages of NDIS..( Multiple protocols on same
adapter..)
13 ) If ur network has only Win95 or WfW computers the u cannot use User-Level Security..
14) ATM can transmit at > 100mbps..
15) Frame realy gives u badwidth on demand...
16) know which topology uses which cable and which connectors..
17) Watch out for questions that say minimal administration ...(I think i got this one wrong)
Thats all and remeber go thru most of the pages on this site and you'll breeze thru the Exam...
