I just passed Networking Essentials and let me tell you Im glad its over. Its not hard persay its just involved and covers a lot of material. This site totally saved my ass. Almost every test question I saw on this site was on the test. I took the non-adaptive version you need 793 to pass I scored 862 which isnt the best but hey Im not complaining. I got 100% on implementation, 94% on planning, 80% on troubleshooting and 74% on Terminology, which is why my score was as low as it was. I HATE ACRONYMS!
Know your transport, network, and application protocols I had a question like ..
Network Protocols- IP, IPX, NetBEUI
Transport Protocols- TCP, SPX, NetBios
Application Protocol- FTP etc .
(There was only one question asking about transport protocols tho)
Know your connectivity devices, what they are for and what they do, there were A LOT of questions about them
Router filters broadcasts but DOESNT translate protocols it can connect networks of unlike media though such as 10BaseT and Token Ring
Gateways translate Protocols
Bridges segment networks and doesnt discriminate between protocols
KNOW IRQ setting
Com! IRQ4, COM2 IRQ3, LPT1 IRQ7 and LPT2 IRQ5 if it is being used there was a question something like
You have just installed a network card on IRQ5 you are already using COM1, COM2, LPT1, and LPT2 which device is in conflict, know that it is LPT2.
You have a network that is using NetBEUI and TCP/IP you want to segment the network, what device would you use to do this with?
Answer is a bridge cause it segments networks using non-routable protocols dont be fooled into thinking it would be a gateway I thought that at first as well.
Situation (which I had 20 of lucky me)
You have 3 offices one in NY, LA, Atlanta you want to connect the networks in these areas
Required result
To have all the networks communicating
To have a transfer rate of at least 1 MBPS
Optional result
Keep all sites communicating if one link goes down
Keep a transfer rate of 1 MBPS even if a link goes down
Proposed solution
Connect the sites using 2 T1 connections
Remember that in order to have redundancy you must have a loop, which would mean 3 T1 connections, so the answer would be only the required result
The next question I had was the same but used 3 T1 connections.
I had at least 3 questions when Protocol analyzer was the answer
Know ODI and NDIS and what they do
KNOW YOUR CABLE TYPES expense, distance, etc,,,
With 10BaseT networks you need a repeater atleast every 300 meters
Know what FDDI is- fiber optic LANs with 100 MBPS made for token ring networks
If you study hard and look over this site then you will do fine but dont take this test for granted I was shocked at how involved it was and I thought this was going to be an easy one. Mark the long situational questions and go back to them later that way you dont fry your brain before you get to the easy questions. I did that and it seemed to work better for me GOOD LUCK EVERYONE
