Hello my name is Mike and I passed today with a 862, not bad....Here is my study sheet that I acquired by reading the braindumps..

Application- Telnet, FTP, SMTP, Gateways,

Presentation- SMB, Redirecter

Session- NetBIOS

Transport- SPX, TCP, UDP (transport protocols use routing tables)

Network- IP, IPX, NWLink, NetBEUI, DDP (Apple), Routers

Data Link- DLC, (IBM, HP printing), Bridge

Physical-Repeaters, Where most problems occur

SNMP(Network Management) uses TCP/IP

Dial Up protocols

PPP-automatic IP, and compression

SLIP-found on older machines, doesn't do compression or IP addressing

Troubleshooting common answers:

Frame Relay offers bandwidth on demand.

Netware(IPX) = frametype

Token Ring = Ring speed or protocol mismatch

Ethernet = transceiver type

NDIS and ODI

allow network cards to be independent of the protocols.

ODI eliminates need for custom driver for every protocol/NIC combination

vendors create cards to ODI standard

What do NDIS and ODI give you? A: NICs independent from protocols

NetBIOS universal naming convention:

\\computername\sharename

High disktimes and pagefaults are often due to memory problems, High CPU times a new CPU is required.

RIP- Is for distance vectoring and for determining the number of hops.

Broadband-(AAU)Analog, Amplifiers, and Unidirectional

Baseband-(BDR)Bi-directional, Digital, Repeater

NDIS and ODI are designed to bind multiple protocols to a single NIC. NDIS allows network protocols to be independent of adapter card. Both Will bind multiple protocol stacks and NICs however ODI is Novell and NDIS is Microsoft.!

RAID levels

Level 0- Striping without parity

Level 1- Disk mirroring or duplexing

Level 5- Disk striping with parity

All are supported by NT and have built in Fault Tolerance!!!

IRQ Specs.

Com2 and Com4 use IRQ-3

Com1 and Com3 use IRQ- 4

LPT1 uses IRQ-7

LPT2 uses IRQ-5

Cable Spec.

10BaseT- uses UTP or STP cable and transmits upto 100 meters

10Base2- uses Thin Coax cable and transmits upto 185 meters

10Base5-Uses Thick Coax cable and can transmit upto 500 meters(Known as Standard Ethernet)

UTP cable

CAT 1-4mbps

CAT 3-10mbps

CAT 4-16mbps

CAT 5-100mbps

3 cities with 3 T1 links- meets required and all optional

3 cities with 2 T1 links- meets required only

2 cards set up identically can't access network?-change to factory settings

card with IRQ 3 setting ? conflicts with com 2

upgrade from 10baseT to 100baseT?- change to category 5 cable

On the two long questions about NetBIOS naming with 20,000 client and servers, required was unique names which must still work after WAN is established, optional must be able to tell server function and user and departments (or something like that) first

Tool to identify a faulty network card- Protocol Analyzer

Token Ring to Ethernet transfer speed differences is because of FRAME SIZE DIFFERENCES not TCP window or speed of Ethernet.

High level file protocol is SMP if FTP is not offered. AFP is at presentation so is lower.

Three major topologies:

BUS-cheap and easy to work with

Slow and cable break can affect whole network

RING-equal access

One machine can affect whole network

STAR-easy to expand, and set-up

Hub is required

QUESTIONS TO LOOK FOR!

Peer-to-Peer use NWLink

Windows for Workgroups use IPX or NetBUEI

PC not networking but software seems to have initilized? Wrong transciever/frame type

How do you increase lagging Disk Access time? Implement disk striping w/ parity

What is the name of the "number sequence" you need for handling an IP-Address ?

Answer: Subnetmask

You can ping a serverby it's IP address (numerical), but can't reach it by it's name. What's wrong?

Answer: Wins-Server.

With which devices can you measure the bandwidth of a new installation side ?

Network Analyzer

NT can do both User-level and Share Level Security!

You have five windows 95 peer to peer network. What is the protocol used? DLC

TIPS:

When in doubt choose ATM for WAN related questions

Choose Protocol Analyzer for troubleshooting

Choose either frame type or transciever for related problems

Remember that WINS resolves NetBIOS names to IP addresses. DHCP automatically

assigns IP addresses to clients.

ATM - except for one that can increase it's bandwidth capability (which you put frame relay as the answer), answer is ATM

Token Ring to Ethernet transfer speed differences is because of FRAME SIZE DIFFERENCES not TCP window or speed of Ethernet.

Don't get mad if you fail remember this: 80% of all applicants fail the first time around. Two things to remember pray before you take the test and Smile :-) no matter what happens after the test!!!

Good Luck and thank you to everybody who had helped me prepare for this exam..
