I just passed the Net Ess yesterday with over 90 %, I'm happy, but could have been better. Thank everybody for contributing to this site. It's been useful for me and it's time to make a small contribution.

First some of the question I think I missed.

1. Scenario: Disaster recovery when hardware failure and 2 hour of downtime is allowed. desired: monitor access, clean visus ... solution:

Q1: use UPS, implement policy on shared, install virus software, and implement disk striping on all servers. (no auditing) so my answer was "met the required and only 2 other desired options". WRONG. Diskstriping here means RAID Level 0, which is not redundancy. Diskstriping with parity is the one needed but not in the solution.

Q2: same scenario, same solution except auditing is used. I quickly jumped to Yes met all required and disired options. Wrong again, the answer is the same as above.

2. Ethernet connected to token ring and only running IPX/SPX, you want to use IPX/SPX addressing to filter data. What should you use:

• .repeater
• .brigde
• .router
• .gateway

I pick router in a hurry forgetting the different MAC protocol. The answer should have been Gateway.

That's all I can think of that I have missed. The ones I didn't miss are quite familiar to all those faced by many who have posted here.

Q: Scenario: Network of bla bla...... and you want to reduce usage by 50%
disired: minimised cost and room for expansion.
Solution: replace 10baseT cards, cable, hubs with that of 100BaseT.

A: met the required and only one of the desired.

Q: same scinario, same required and desired results. Solutions: reduce the frame size and increase TCP windows size.

A: not meet the required as more frames will cause more collisions and only slowdown the network. in addition, by increasing windows size, you will affect the timing of the acknowlege frame causing the sending device to think the prevous frame did not get there and therefore send the frame again. (in my opinion)

Q: Network perfomance reports a large number of broadcast storm, net is using Netbeui. what is the best thing to do:

• . use router to segment the network
• . use bridge to segment the net work
• . use gateway to...
• . Use router and tcp/ip instead of netbeui

I pick the last one

Q: EthernetNetwork is not functioning You use DVM to check: cable, between the core and the shield: 0 ohm, Tconnector: infinite, Terminators both 50 ohms. What do you do:

• .replace the T
• .replace the cable
• .replace the networkcards
• .replace the terminator.

The answer is b: the cable

Q:Network of 10 windows NT workstations, what can you do with security, chose all applicable:

• . user level security access ( The wording is not so straight forword)
• . share level access

Anser: both

Q: Windows 95, 10. What security you and set up. Choices are the same as above the answer is sharelevel. Note that if Win95 attached to NT server in a domain environment, you can setup user security level as well, same as NT .

Q.What device to check packets:

A: Protocol analizer

Q.What's the purpose of NDIS:

A: allow network cards to be independent of the protocols.

Q: What works at transport and above layer of the OSI

A: Gateway

Q: A client's computer connected to an IPX network, netware initialization OK but still can not talk to the network:

A: wrong frame type. Though I/O address is given as an option, I think once the initialization of the card is successful, the IO must be right.

The rest of the exam was Ok. However much harder than I had expected.

Following are some tips:

• The hardest thing about the exam is the scenario questions because they are distracting. you are given heaps of unnessessary info and by the time you get to the requirements and solution, your memory is flooded with all the rubbish. My trick was I read the requirements, options, and solutions first, think about it and read the information about the scinario. In many cases, the answer is obvious without you having to go though the unnessessary stuff. But read it anyway. Importantly, mark them and come back later when you have finished all the easy ones.
• Don't just rely on the textbook, get as many test questions as you can. I couldn't afford transcender but I practice on demos from all that I can get my hand on. Talking about transcender, if you are practicing on there demo version that comes with the Sybex book, beware, there was a mistake in the Q about Mary's 5 year old computer connected to the internet but the protocol can not assign IP address automatically, what protocol is being used. The anwer should be Slip (every body knows this) but they gave PPP as the answer. I got the same question on the exam and of course I pick the right one.
