I just got done taking the Networking Essentials exam on 4/30/98 I pssed
with
a 896/1000.
Standards and terminology - 93%
Planning - 100%
Implementation - 84%
Toubleshooting - 80%
There are 58 questions on the test and you need to get 793/1000 to pass
the exam.
I have not taken any other exan yet but I thought this was a very tough
exam. I took the exam about three weeks ago and failed with a 724. I had
only studied the Transcender tests which provide a good deal of information
but not nearly enough to pass. I do not know how I would have passed without
the braindumps. Thanks to everyone who had contributed.
I would suggest reading all of the brain dumps but there are some inconsistancies
between other poeple braindumps. Some give you answers to different questions
so research the answer that is given in the braindump.
- Know the OSI model very well. Do not only know hte names of each layer
but know the funtion of each.
- Know that SMB lies in the presentaion layer along with the redirector
- Know that DLC resides in the Data link layer and is associated with
Mainframes and Hewlett Packard printers
- Know PPP and Slip. PPP supports dynamic IP addressing and that slip
does not. Slip is associated with TCP/IP and is found on Older machines
- Know NDIS/ODI......NDIS/Microsoft.........ODI/Novell
- allow drivers to be separate from compliant protocol
- bind multiple protocols to single NIC or multiple NIC
- BE SURE TO WATCH THE WORDING ON THESE QUESTIONS
- Know Win NT Userlevel security
- Win 95 sharelevel
- Know 802.3 ethernet - be sure to watch what they are asking - 10baseT,
10base2 etc.
- 802.5 Token Ring
- Know that DLC, LAT, Netbeui are the only nonroutable pprotocols, all
other protocaols are routable
- nothing on infared for me some of these test could be very different
than others so study everything
- application server does the processing for the clients request
- UNC cumputer name/sharename
- Know cable lengths
- know that routers opperate at the network layer,bridges-datalink,repeaters-
physical
- routers do not pass broadcasts
- you have an option to turn off the bridging on an Brouter, willnot
pass broadcast traffic.
if computer have problems transmitting with IPX Netbuei usally implies
incorrect frame type
Scenerios
This is one of my weakest areas
- My advice is to read form the bottom up. They give you a whole ton
of information that you will not even need. Pay attention the protocols
they are using and which connectivity device you are using
- Know that Wins server resolves Netbios
- DHCP resolves/configures TCP/IP
- I would try to obtain as much info as you possibly can for these because
the book does not give you much of anything to study from and the test
ask about two or three ?s on these
- Know RG-58 U and RG-58 A/U are not compatible....Rg-58 A/U is ethernet
standard so replace the cable with RG-58A/U
- 0ohms -----short in cable
- Infinite----break in cable
- 50ohms in terminators
Thats all I can really remember. The best advice that I can give is to
study all of the brain dumps and reserch the answers you are not sure about.
Watch what they are asking for on some of hte uestions..........SPECIFICALLY
WHAT THEY ARE ASKING FOR.
Thats all, good luck
