Exam 70-058/Networking Essentials

Just passed the Essentials exam this morning 15-9-98 with  913/1000.

This was my 3rd test on the long way to MCSE, done NT server & NT workstation.   I have used the braindumps only when taking the WKSTATION and ESSENTIAL, but since it helped me so much, i figured that it's time to contribute my own dump to help others like they did to me.

Material used: Transcender, Exam Cram, MS-PEP, TechNet and This magnificent site.

Did get about 10 scenarios, 3 exhibit questions (Mesh, 2xT1, 3xT1), about 5 on Novell server and client connectivity with NT. The rest were very similar to what i've seen on other braindumps and the Transcender sample tests.  During the exam i've encountered some questions that i've never seen before, let share this information with you.

Q: What is a purpose of NDIS ?
a.) To allow any compliant transport protocol to pass data to any compliant network adapter.
b.) To allow any compliant transport protocol to pass data to any compliant network redirector.
c.) To define the common signaling scheme that all vendor's adapters use when transmitting packets.
d.) To define the voltage levels that must be applied to the pinouts on the network adapters
15-pin AUI connector.
I choose A. That was a guess, so check it out!

Q: 35 clients + 1 NT server. Network performance is steadly decreasing when adding new clients.  When using performance monitor you get these results:
% processor time = 8
Page faults/sec = 2
% Disk time = 25
What should you do improve network perfs?
a.) Replace to multiprocessor.
b.) Add more RAM.
c.) Install disk striping with parity.
d.) Segment network by adding another NIC on the server.
I choose B. I remembered that i've read in the counter description on performance monitor that if the page faults/sec is reading 2 then you should add more RAM. Still this was a shoot in the dark for me. Again - check it.

Q: In the past year, you have added 55 client computers to your 10BaseT Ethernet network.  Users of the network report that network response is slow during peak hours of usage.  Which solution is the most economical?
a.) Replace all Ethernet adapters with FDDI adapters.
b.) Replace all Ethernet concentrators with Ethernet switches.
c.) Replace all Ethernet components with 100Mbps ATM equivalents.
d.) Replace all Ethernet components with 16Mbps Token-Ring equivalents.
I choose B. It seemed to me that replacing only the Switches is more economical. Since i assumed that there should'nt be more than two/three hubs with 55 clients.

Q: Your 10BaseT Ethernet network uses NetBEUI. Users of your client computers need to access an IBM 3090 mainframe computer by using a 3270 terminal-emulation program.   Which device must you install?
a.) bridge
b.) gateway
c.) router
d.) brouter
I went with B. I know that if it was TCP/IP instead of NetBEUI i'd use a router, but i could'nt decide whether to take the "bridge" the "gateway" or the "brouter". I know that when you have a doubt then you should choose the least reasonable one, so i choose the "gateway". And for your own sake, check this one.

That's all folks! I'm off to NT server Enterprise. Best luck for all who take the exam...
