I wrote my Networking Essentials exam and passed with a 931. I used the Self Paced Networking Essentials book, Exam Cram book, transcenders and looked at the brain dumps on the internet. Here is what I can remember from the exam that I had.
1- WAN technology that can communicate over 100 Mbps? (ATM)
2- WAN technology that can simultaneously send Data, voice & video? (ATM)
3- One question about someones dial-up cannot provide automatic IP addressing what protocol is being used?(SLIP)
4- Which protocol do you use for Dial-up communication? (Choose all that
apply)
SLIP, PPP, were the only choices so I choose both
5- You want to segment your network and are running both TCP/IP and Netbeui. You want to be able to communicate with both on all segments what do you use? (Brouter)
6- You are running only NetBeui and want to segment your network, and reduce network traffic? (Bridge)
7- You have Win95 computers and you want them to communicate with a mainframe? (Gateway)
8- You are running NWLINK IPX and want to reduce traffic what do you use? (Router)
9- LAN is over 300 meters on 10 BaseT cable what do you use? (repeater, baseband)
10- Which runs at or above Transport layer? (Gateway)
7-9 scenario questions
11- 3 cities link with 2 T1 lines?
Required - Communicate over 1mbps
Optional 1 - Fault tolerance 2 - Keep connection if 1 line goes down
Yes to required, no to optional
12- 3 cities link with 3 T1 lines
Required - Communicate over 1mbps
Optional 1 - Fault tolerance 2 - Keep connection if 1 line goes down
Yes all required and optional
13&14- 2 Scenarios about reducing network traffic by 50%
1 Where you upgrade your cable, hubs and NICs to 100 Mbps
2 Where you increase TCP/IP window size, change receive and buffer size,
15&16- 2 Scenarios about using NetBios naming on your network
1 Where you give all PCs a hex 15 digit number to identify them
2 Where you give servers a name based on their department and workstations defined by the users e-mail name
dont remember the other 2-3 scenarios
20- Windows 95 machines networked? Share level security or User level security
21- Windows NT workstation machines networked? Share level or User level security
22- Which protocols are routable? NWLINK, Appletalk, NetBeui, DLC, XNS
23- A question with 58 /U cable, and 58 A/U on same network, you are having sporadic problems you check cables with Voltmeter and get infinite on core to shield and something else but I dont remember? What should you do? (Replace all 58 /U cable with 58 A/U cable was my choice)
24- A question about what kind of server does a certain function. My choice was application server.
25- A diagram showing a picture of a Network topology. The pictured showed a Mesh topology
26- A question about infinite on cable, 50ohm on terminators, and 0 on T connectors, whats the problem?
27- You are setting up a 100 Mbps network in a building which is pre-wired. After testing you decided the cabling is category 3 compliant. What do you do? (Keep existing, change to cat5, and 2 other, cat 5 my choice)
28-33- 6 question about network cards configurations or with NWLINK or
IPX;
All answers to my knowledge were either, wrong IRQ, or wrong transceiver
setting, or wrong frame type
34- You want to implement a 100 Mbps LAN which cable to use? Cat5
35- You want to connect 2 buildings together that are 1000 meters apart and communicate at 100Mbps and provide some security on the cable. What do you choose? (Fiber-optic)
36- IEEE 802.3 standard about 10BaseT? (Use UTP cable)
37- IEEE 802.3 standard about 10Base2? (Use BNC connector).
38-41- 4 questions I believe where all answers were Protocol Analyzer
42- Definition question. What is interference from another cable? (Crosstalk)
43- Definition question. How is communication between routers done using? (RIP)
44- What is slated to replace current phone technology? (ISDN)
45- A question about wanting to make a network central with little administration? I think I picked User-level allowing user to share their resources, something to that affect
46- Meaning of client/server network. I think answer was, client sends requests and server does back end processing
47- I think there was a question about what offers bandwidth on demand.
48- A question about what is meant by connection oriented network? (Unreliable but fast)
49- What is required to implement user-level security? (Windows NT server)
50&51- 2 questions about NDIS, what is it for? one I believe was so that the NIC is separate from protocol
52- A question about reducing the network traffic where you are using NetBeui. (Replace Ethernet hub with Ethernet switching hub)
53- Performance monitor shows 3 things %Processor Time, %Page Faults/s (2), and %Disk Reads (25). What should you do? Im not sure about the numbers but I picked add RAM
54- Display of a computer configuration. You install a NIC using IRQ 3, what is the conflict? COM2
55- UNC question about what should be in a UNC name. (Computer name and share name)
Well thats what I can remember about my exam. I hope that my memory can help someone as the other Brain Dumps helped me.
My only advise is that the wording in the questions is tricky so read them carefully. The first time through the exam just mark the scenarios and anything that you dont quite get at that time. You can go back to it later. Also with the scenarios sometimes you may find that if you look at both scenarios (If they are the paired ones) before you answer them, one scenario might give you an insight as to what the answer should be on both.
Good luck J
