Subject: TCP/IP (70-059) Braindump
I passed 70-059 today with a score of 931. It took me 86 of the 90 minutes to complete it and my overall impression of the test is that it was very hard and the answers at times were subtle. These braindumps have been quite helpful to me for each of the three tests that I have taken (and passed!) so here is my contribution, extracted from my rapidly fading memory shortly after completing the test.
- One question each on nbtstat, netstat, tracert, ipconfig, and arp; no specifics, just what they do in general.
- Seven or eight scenario based questions, six of them bunched together near the end of the test. Four of them were based on the same scenario, a mixed NT and UNIX network involving the setup of a router, DHCP, and name resolution.
- Several on Hosts and LMHosts files. Know their configuration and under what circumstances and operating systems they are used.
- Three or four on configuration of static routing tables in network with two routers.
- One question that I couldn't figure out until right down to the wire (I am making the assumption here that I got it right) revolved around a host that couldn't resolve a remote host with it's NetBIOS name but could with it's IP address. Host # 1 was configured to use WINS and had an LMHosts file with the correct entries for the remote host. Here it gets a little foggy, but either the WINS server was down or the remote host was not WINS enabled and the answer was that the first host was configured for p-node name resolution, which is WINS only, so it wouldn't use the LMHosts file.
- A few questions on DNS, know the difference between caching, secondary, and forwarding server.
- One question on security over a RAS PPTP connection.
- A couple of SNMP questions on the roles of management station and agent.
- A couple that require you to know the difference between monitoring TCP/IP with Network Monitor and Performance Monitor.
- One name resolution question revolving around two WINS servers on separate subnets. Hosts on one subnet can't connect with hosts on the other subnet using NetBIOS names. Answer was to set up WINS servers as replication partners.
- Four or five questions on subnetting calculations. Write out subnet mask table and address blocks before hand.
- Three or four questions that require you to know the consequences (can't connect to either local or remote host) of incorrect subnet mask, default gateway, or IP address.
That is about all I can dredge from my mind. I took NT classes from Infotec and used Transcender and Self Test practice exams to study. I used Transcender for the NT Server exam as well and they are a very close approximation to the real thing. I particularly like the fact that they explain the answers when you are done. I like the Self Test software because it maps almost directly to the classroom training. The two compliment each other if you can afford both or if you have a generous employer like I do.
Good luck to all and thanks for the help; I am on to Workstation next.
