Here is some more info that you can put on your braindump page if you wish about the TCP/IP on NT 4.0 test.

More tips on the tcp/ip exam.

I thought the TCP/IP test wasn't that bad, I used a lot of the information from the MCSE list, New Riders TCP/IP study guide, and white papers from Microsoft's web site on DNS and WINS.

Im not sure if you took the 3.51 tcp/ip test. I didn't... but I know the exam covers more of the 4.0 material and is much more straight forward. There was questions on DNS where you had to state which type of DNS server to set up in a given situation. (Primary, Secondary, Cache-Only). I had a question on secondary and a cache-only where they would give a easy situation and you had to state which one to use.

There were multiple questions on friendly name vs ip address issues. In these questions you had to figure out why the friendly name was not working but the ip address was working. Most of these were either missing a DNS server or a WINS server, and that you had to state which one was necessary (ie if any unix client or MAC clients are involved you must use a DNS server). There was a question on when to set up a WINS server. It stated something to the effect of clients that need dynamic updatable ip to name tables, what service should you use.

I had a question on PPTP. The question stated what should this company use to initiate secure network communication over the internet to its lan.

I had example DNS file that had a mistake in it.

128.133.44.55 server1
128.133.44.60 server2 mickey
128.133.44.70 mickey

They wanted to know why I could ping mickey but not ping the ip address on the 3rd line. Its because the 2nd line is what is returned first.

I had a question on which node type to use with WINS - h-node

I had multiple questions on when to use the various utils. Nothing hard here, mainly give away questions. Know when to use arp, netstat, nbtstat, tracert, ping, route.

I had 4 questions on netstat vs network monitor vs perf monitor. They were not that bad after you made it though all four. Know that perf monitor will be able to log the date and export it to a spreadsheet. Know that netstat will give you tcp stats since the server had started. Know that network monitor will give you real time stats and that you can capture and look at packets real time with network monitor.

I had a question whose answer was CNAME. It asked how to set up a web server with the www in place of the servers real name. You have to add a record in the DNS server.

I had 2 questions on WINS repl. The first was one of those required and 2 optional criteria. I stated that it met all the required and optional criteria. The had a situation where a company had 2 sites and wanted to schedule replication after hours. They set up one as a push and one as a pull.

I of course had about 5 or 6 subnet questions. They were straight forward. If you know the basic conversion chart you will be fine. They gave you a class address and wanted to know which subnet to use for the max number of hosts per subnet.

I had 6 more of those required and optional questions. They gave the same situation with different proposed solutions and you had to say if it met the required and how many of the optional items. They were easy if you look at all of them and then go back and answer the questions.

This is all I can remember for now,

Take care,

Greg
