TCP/IP - 70-059

This is Adaptive, but not with Simulations. 570 to Pass, I got 694.

I was not real happy with my score because I had a 900+ average going  up to this point(3 tests), but the passing score has gone from 750(standard form) to 570(Adaptive)so I guess I should expect my score  to be about 200 points lower too.

I used the Osborne McGraw-Hill; ISBN: 0078824893 "MCSE Microsoft TCP/IP Windows NT 4.0 Study Guide",($50 and amazon.com has it on line), and read about 1/2 of the MOC book. The MOC book leaves out a bit(it's Microsoft, what do you expect), as does the Osborne book, but  between them(~1200 pages) and having a server to play with you've got it covered.

One test yet to go and I'm just gonna buy two IIS books right from the start, skip the Trancender and Exam Cram and go "balls to he wall"!

NOTE: Most of this post is going to be what this test is NOT.

I had 25 Adaptive questions, though it told me before had it would be 25 questions Adaptive and 10 questions 'standard'.

Nothing on "You need 'x' subnets, and 'y' hosts, what subnet mask do you use?" <This was big on Trancender>

Nothing on the OSI or TCP stack models

Nothing on the History of TCP/IP

Nothing on 'Installation/Configuration' of DHCP scopes, DNS zones, or WINS.

Nothing on FTP, except one, "You can get in with FTP, but not thru Explorer, why?" <FTP was big on Trancender>

NO routing, no "ROUTE ADD" syntax, no 2 multihomed host each using the other as 'Default Gateway', but a couple of scenario questions where they want it and you have to make sure it is BOOTP/DHCP forwarding is 'on'.

Nothing on syntax of HOSTS and LMHOSTS files <This was big on Trancender>

Nothing on subnetting per se, but you do have to know how to "AND" to see if Hosts are on the same network. Something like:

*IP Address of w.x.112.z mask 255.255.248.0. Which hosts on the same network? pick 2:

a) w.x.81.c

b) w.x.112.0

c) w.x.112.255

d) w.x.113.a

e) w.x.116.b

<I picked d) and e), but as I type this I'm not so sure>

Since it was adaptive I got really worried if I got questions like:

*What uses MIBS?

a) Telnet

(b) SNMP

c) FTP

d) Ping

that are so obvious that I knew I must have just screwed up and easy one.

I couldn't believe the one I got that was PURE RAS! Nothing to do with TCP/IP at all. Something like:

*Jane dials into a RAS server, gets an IP address, but can't connect  to the network. What's wrong?

a) The address is given by DHCP and is excluded from the network

b) The address is given by RAS and is excluded from the network

(c) TCP/IP is excluded from accessing the network

d) The RAS server is down

e) somethingelse

What the hell does this have to do with TCP/IP? I ask you...

One scenario question about WINS replication, so you have to know how PUSH and PULL interact. A PUSH forces a PULL from the other side. I wasn't aware of this and got this question wrong. But is was an odd little diagram/scenario question.

* Seattle & Dallas.

req: Sea MUST replicate to Dal

opt1:Dal replicate with Sea

opt2:minimize traffic, so only replicate once per day

Push/partner Pull/partner

---- ------------- --------------

Sea 50000 changes/Dal

Dal Every 24 hours/Sea

I picked Req & One Opt, but that's probably wrong. I don't think Dal will replicate with Sea at all, and my bet is that 50000 changes is more than once per day.

Only one which utility do you use, and no what is the switch to do "x" questions, and an almost useful troubleshooting example question.

Usually they are testing on how closely you read all the useless junk and double negatives in the question, rather than giving you real life useful examples. This one was actually kind of clever. *Something like the usual you get a message that the IP address is  already used, so you go to another workstation and which utility do you use to see what machine name is using it?

a) PING

(b) NBTSTAT

c) ARP

d) DHCP

e) somethingelse

One 'Exhibit' question. <I get REALLY foggy here> *Security Tab of the SNMP manager Send Authentication Traps checked Community was "netmgmt" Accept packets from any host checked

NT w/s as Management Station, SNMP running on server named 'SERVCON1' How to make SNMP work?

a) Do something on SERVCON1

(b) Set Management Station to participate in 'netmgmt' Community

c) Somethingoranother

d) Somethingelse

e) Someotherdamnthing

Really glad to be done with this, and looking forward to forgetting all those damn switches. The concept of memorizing them is completely stupid. All the commands have 'COMMAND /?' so you can look them up as you need them.

This damn MCSE better get me a big raise. I have paid for all of the books, the server hardware, the membership in the NPA(which got me a trial copy of Back Office<NT4, SNA3, SQL6, etc>), and spend 40-50 hours per exam studying for them. Granted I can write all but the hours off on my taxes, but still...

Remember, "If at first you don't succeed, call 800 755-exam and register to take it over."

The Trancender for this test isn't very useful anymore, I failed all 3 tests there, repeatedly...never passed one, and still passed this, so don't expect to have Trancender 'give you' any 'very similar'  questions (at least until they rev. it for the Adaptive tests)
