Exam was pretty tough... you better study and have all the material down... half-way through I thought I was going to run out of time. The subnetting and planning question are not too hard. They come in the form you have x no of subnets with y expected over the next 2 yrs.

  1. What subnet mask will you use to have the maximum number of hosts per subnet. This is pretty easy if you have the possible masks memorized. Take Herb's advice on his web page and memorize those tables.
  2. There were a ton of questions on command line utilities and their use.(arp, netstat, nbtstat, ipconfig) understand their output and various use of switches.
  3. Conceptual questions on route, tracert, and ping. Know what they are and how they are used. Knowing these utilities makes the trouble-shooting scenario questions easier because clues and the problem is described via these utilities.
  4. The next major section is DHCP, WINS and DNS integration with UNIX as well as windows based clients. You should already know what they are used for. The exam tests to see if you know when to use them and how to integrate them to work together.
  5. There were a few basic questions on the TCP/IP printing... know how to use lpr, lpq and the difference between them.
  6. There were questions on SNMP setup and deployment given various scenarios.
  7. Oh... almost forgot... know Network Monitor, what it's for and Performance Monitor counters as they apply to TCP/IP. That's enough for now...

Just got my new twin dual-p Compaq Proliants... gonna go play and setup my first cluster....
