Thanks to everyone for the great information in preparation for TCP/IP
4.0 (70-059). Passed today with a score of 948. Everyone had pumped me up
on how you had to live, eat, and breath subnetting, but I was suprised in
that I had only 3 direct questions on subnetting and probably only about
5 other indirect questions (user cannot connect to remote server, here is
the setup).
But on the other hand I had close to ten questions related to SNMP, Network
Monitor, Performance Monitor, netstat, and nbstat. If I had to take the
exam over I would definitely make sure that I had a complete understanding
of what each tool did (including what tools allow you to store data for
later use and export to other apps).
Some other key subject areas for the exam was:
- DHCP. Configuring DHCP, including multiple DHCP servers and scopes.
Setting up DHCP servers to backup each other. What is a DHCP relay agent,
where can it be installed, and how is it configured? Another couple of
questions were related to setting up global scopes to supply the WINS and
DNS information.
- WINS. What is WINS used for? When would you use a WINS proxy. What
are the ways you can configure the WINS servers a client uses. When would
you use replication. What file (LMHOSTS) could be used to import into WINS.
Configuring a client to use WINS (DHCP option or manually set). When would
you add a static mapping, how would you add a static mapping for a multi-homed
machine.
- DNS. What is DNS used for, when would a DNS server be used compared
to a WINS server (name.name or \\name\name). A couple of questions were
on having non-windows TCP/IP devices use DNS to resolve NetBios names and
configuring the DNS server to use WINS resolution.
There were a number of questions on HOSTS files. I had two questions where
there was an incorrect HOSTS file, almost trick questions actually. In
one case the the user could ftp using the host name but not the IP address,
and another where they could ping with the IP address but not the hostname.
Tricky set of questions.
- There was a question on what you needed to consider from the network
id (# of subnets) when defining a subnet mask.
- There were a few questions on RIP for IP. Understand what it is used
for (dynamic routing tables). There was a couple of proposed solution questions
on setting up a multihomed machine as a router and DHCP server. Know how
to do this correctly.
- A couple of questions on TCP/IP printing. Know the difference between
LPR, LPD, and LPQ
- Subnet mask. Know how problems related to incorrect subnet masks manifest
itself.
- A question on PPTP, accessing a network from the Internet, and PPTP
filtering
- There was a block of 3 proposed solution questions on setting up DHCP,
WINS, and DNS correctly in a Windows TCP/IP and UNIX environment to provide
DHCP services and name resolution.
- There was a question on moving a DHCP client from one subnet to another
and possible problems in receiving the correct DNS server addresses (manually
set, client option)
- There were a couple of questions regarding using LMHOSTS files to connect
PDCs and BDCs. There was also a question on setting up LMHOSTS file so
users could login from multiple domain controllers.
- There was a question on what you would use to configure mail router
address in DNS (MX)
- Know the difference between a global, scope, and client options and
when you would use each
- Know what a client reservation is and when you would use it in DHCP
- Know what needs to be set to send a SMTP trap message to a specific
destination (mgmt station's community and IP address)
- How would you configure TCP/IP printing to create a printer share for
a printer connected to a UNIX box
- What service is needed for Performance Monitor to view TCP/IP (SNMP)
Lots of questions on WINS, DHCP, DNS, and just a whole boatload on monitoring
tools. Best of luck!!!
