Greetings from South Africa
I would firstly like to thank all those who have contributed to requests for comments on this list.
My impressions of the exam:
This was one the most straight forward exams in the MCSE track. Nothing tricky or difficult. I did find the chapters on Subnetting in the official MS TCPIP notes to be inadequate though.
I was really carefull about my time usage in the exam. I went through the simple, shorter questions first, marking those scenario questions as I went along. I then went to the ones that I marked. This gave me ample time to go through the questions one more time and gave me 4 minutes to spare.
I did not use the calculator once. What I did use though was the table provided at the MCPMAG site.
The Exam:
Know your DNS, WINS and DHCP well. A lot of questions on the actual correlation of the LMHOSTS ad Hosts files to Wins and DNS. Know BootP, DHCP Relay agent, Wins proxy. Know when to enable LMHOSTS and DNS for Windows Resolution. Can you enable WINS for DNS resolution? Find out before writing this exam !
A lot of questions on the use of the various utils. Know then well. Know when to use Perfomance monitor, network monitor, snmp...
The subnetting questions were easy once you understand subnetting and then understand the table.
Know troubleshooting tcpip connections, when subnet mask incorrect, when ip address incorrect, when default gateway incorrect.
I think this is not a difficult exam, time management is very important and applying the Table to the subnetting questions definately helps.
Good Luck
