You have four HD with 250MB on each. You create a Stripe set without parity, One drive fails, how do you restore the data?

A) Break mirror

B) Regenerate

C) replace disk and do nothing else

D) restore from backup

They said WITHOUT parity!!! Always be on the lookout for tricks like this. In fact whenever I saw 'strip set', I immediately double check to see of it said 'with' or 'without'

If the server goes down, users CANNOT log in!!!! I can't stress this enough. I've seen several sources stating differently, but they are WRONG.

The confusion on this question is generated from a bug that actually allows users to log in using a cached profile, but this bug has been fixed in SP3. Take my word for it, I got 100% on Connectivity.

what happens when you transfer file from a NTFS partition to a FAT partition?

LFN retain; permissions lost

A couple of questions on ARC paths: you must know that:

C. 500 MB

D. 250 MB

You want to prevent anyone not in the Administrators group from logging into the domain from a domain controller. How?

Make sure that only Administrators group has the right to logon locally. The question has some potential choices that mention bogosity about the Interactive group. If you've done your research and know what this group is for, you know to ignore them.

Key factoid: Assigning this right from within User Manager for Domains puts it into effect for all domain controllers. User rights assigned in this way may not be available on all member servers -- you may need to individually run User Manager for Domains, choose "Select Domain", type in a COMPUTER NAME rather than a domain, and set the right individually for each member server for which you want the right to be in effect.

You want RAS encryption for some users and not for others... how?

Configure encryption for some ports, and no encryption for others; assign users to one set of RAS ports or the other depending on whether or not they need their communication to be encrypted.

Key factoid: ** RAS ENCRYPTION IS SET PER PORT, NOT PER-USER

Question with exhibit showing import/export setup for PDC computer in domain XYZZY. In the box for "Export To:", it shows DOMAIN 1. To which machines will this machine export?

Any BDC, NT Server or NT Workstation that is configured to import the directories being exported by this server.

Key factoids: Files aren't actually exported to any system that doesn't explicitly import them. Think of it like customs and importing/exporting in the real world. Different authorities govern exporting (source country) and importing (destination country), and just because one country let you leave with it, does not mean that the other country automatically imports it. Also, only NT-based systems can import. Win95 and Win3.x systems can't participate in replication at all.

Documents fail to print because the partition in which the spool directory is located, is out of space. What do you do?

Change properties to point to a new spool directory location. There are some bogus choices about using Disk Administrator to extend the system partition.

Key factoids: If you want to change the system-wide spool directory, you can do it through the NT GUI. If you want to change the spool directory for one printer, you have to edit the registry. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!!!

After installing GSNW, what do you do on an NT Server to allow Win95 clients to access files on a Netware Server? USING GSNW

APPLICATION, go into "Configure Gateway", and add new shares and drive letters that you wish to make available. ** I DON'T RECALL

THIS QUESTION FROM ANY OTHER BRAINDUMPS **

Key factoid: You add GSNW shares on your NT Server using the GSNW application's "Configure Gateway" dialog. Specifically, you must use the GSNW app!! Server Manager, Explorer, etc. ... none of those are used for creating the initial Novell Server / drive letter mappings. Look it up if you don't believe me, but in any case, KNOW it.

You have a server with 5 disks, each containing 2 partitions. How do you optimize paging files across these disks?

Distribute equally among all partitions except the one containing the system files, or Distribute equally among all spindles except the one containing the system and boot files? I chose the second, figuring that the location of the boot files was irrelevant.

Key factoids: It doesn't help to have page files on multiple disk _partitions_, and in fact, it probably hurts performance, since the head now has to zoom back and forth across the platter to different areas of the disk. What you REALLY want to do with paging files is distribute them across any _disks_ which (a) do not contain the system files, and (b) are not striped with parity or mirrored. You don't want the disk containing the system files to also be used for paging, because that disk is already very busy, if at all possible. Similarly, you want to spread the paging "load" across many disks so that you can get as much benefit as possible from simultaneous I/O.

To use RAS Autodial, what do you need?

Phonebook entries for the sites that you want to be able to autodial. (Other choices involved DNS, and were bogus)

Key factoid: RAS Autodial does not depend on DNS. In order to use RAS Autodial, you must have Phonebook entries set up for any connection that you want to have auto-activated by RAS Autodial.

** This is logical -- if you don't do this, it won't know where to dial out to. Think about it!

You need to migrate files and user accounts frm NW to NT using MS' Migration Tools. What needs to be installed on the NT machine to do this? I GUESSED GSNW, but I'm not sure it's right, and I can't find this addressed in any of the docs I listed above.

** I think this is a new topic on the test **

You want to implement fault tolerance on a system with 3 disks. NT is installed on C:. What fault tolerance mechanism do you use: disk striping, disk striping with parity, or mirror set?

Use a mirror set.

Key factoids: The disk on which NT is installed CANNOT be part of a stripe set or volume set. Logic: "NT Sever is Not That Smart." Look at the intitials. Get it? When NT starts up, its fancy 'combine-multiple-disks-into-1' code is not yet running. In order to read that code off the disk, it has to be able to get to the disk to begin with, which it can only do, if the code is stored on a single NTFS or FAT volume. So, that means you can only stripe with 2 disks. That means "with parity" is out, because it requires 3. "Disk striping" itself is out, because although it only needs 2 disks, it is NOT fault tolerant and doesn't satisfy the requirement. That leaves mirror set, which you can do.

A stripe set without parity fails. How do you recover?

Restore from backup.

Key factoid: Since a stripe set without parity does not offer any fault tolerance (just improved performance), to recover data lost when it fails, you have to restore from backup.

You want to find out the OS and role of each NT-based computer in the domain. What tool do you use to do this?

Server Manager.

Key factoid: Server Manager can be used to find out what role a machine has in the network (PDC, BDC, member server, workstation), and which version of NT it's running.

How to speed up NETBIOS name resolution across a RAS link?

Put an LMHOSTS file on the RAS client.

Key factoids: NETBIOS name resolution uses LMHOSTS, and TCP/IP domain name resolution uses HOSTS. Use your brain to reason out whether the file goes on the client or server side of the modem. The client is the one making the name resolution queries. So, hardcoding names on the server side still requires a net round-trip for the client to look them up, so that won't speed things up as much as hardcoding the names on the host that's dialing in.

Misc key factoids:

If you don't backup at least one other file on the volume containing the registry, the registry WILL NOT get backed up even if you tell NT to do so. You tell NT to back up the registry by using the /b switch on the NTBACKUP command (NOT THE "r" SWITCH, which restricts accessto the data on the tape), or by selecting the checkbox in the GUI.

Gateway addresses are only used for routed networks. Windows NT does not make ANY assumptions about default subnet masks, and TCP/IP doesn't know how to grab the "host" bits out of the IP address, to properly find the host on this network to send a packet to, unless you tell it where the host bits are, but specifying a subnet mask.

You give clients running Client for MS Networks access to files on a Netware server by installing GSNW on the NT Server.

NWLink gives you the ability to be the client or server for an app; it does not give you any apps like file or print sharing, by itself, although it is required for machines that run apps like GSNW (on servers) or CSNW (on workstations) which communicate with other machines running

NWlink or IPX, and the other side of those apps. Think of NWlink like the x2 protocol on your fast modem, or like TCP/IP. It gives you a channel over which you can run stuff, but by itself, has no end-user functionality.

The place you install video drivers in NT is NOT the same place you install them in Win95. Just remember Control Panel - Display.

If you've installed the NT admin tools for Win95, you can use them to remotely perform various interesting activities on a server, like sharing a CD-ROM. Some people have said that you would use Explorer to do it. This works if you want to share a device which is located on your local computer, but if the device does not already have a share name and is not already shared, and the device is located on a remote system, Explorer won't let you get to it, so you can't use Explorer to do anything with it. Again: Use what you know. You KNOW the only remote resources you can see in Explorer are ones that already have a sharename....

SNMP needs to be installed on any machine whose TCP/IP performance counters you want to monitor using Perfmon. SNMP does NOT need to be installed on the machine you're running Perfmon on, unless you want to monitor its TCP/IP counters, too.

LFN's get retained when copying to NTFS or VFAT partitions. Permissions are ONLY retained if you MOVE files on an NTFS partition to another directory on the same NTFS partition. If you COPY the files, even if it's on the same partition, the files inherit permissions from the parent directory. If you get a question about permissions being retained, READ IT CAREFULLY. MORE THAN ONCE. If it meets the tests of "MOVE" "to and from the same NTFS partition", the permissions are retained. Otherwise, they're not.

One of the main things replication is used for, is to distribute login scripts to all domain controllers. The scripts are customarily kept in the Scripts subdirectory of the export/ import directory. They MUST be kept in a subdirectory of the export directory, to get exported. Any files placed in the export directory itself WILL NOT get exported.

Changes in group membership are effective the next time the user logs in, NOT IMMEDIATELY AFTER THEY ARE CHANGED, and NOT IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE PDC AND BDC SYNCHRONIZE.

You can't backup the registry remotely

Have a tape backup on ea PDC and BDC

Copying or Moving Folders and Files:

Moving and copying - only time they retain permissions is when moved within same volume.

A user cannot copy or move files within or between NTFS volumes, unless the user has the correct permissions. The following table describes the required permissions to copy or move a file or folder to another folder on an NTFS volume or to another NTFS vo

A. Put the Netbeui binding in the first position in the workstations.

You have 4 2Gb drives, 32MB Ram and FAT partition. You want faster access to files, optional results: faster access to paging files and faster access to network.

Proposed solution, Have a boot partiton on one disk, format others with NTFS and create stripe set. Have paging file on stripe set, and configure bindings so the most used protocol is at top of list.

I answered : Solution meets required result and one optional.

You have 200 PC with identical SW and HW how do you automate the build: Choose three

POLEDIT (something)

UNATTENDED.TXT

SETUP.INF

SYSDIFF.EXE

WINDIFF.EXE

UDF

windiff.exe and poledit are red herrings. You defintly need unattended.txt and sysdiff.exe. I not sure if the third is setup.inf or UDF. UDF is for specific machines, eg computer name and so on, surely these 200 machines can't all be standalone machines. The questions however does not say that they won't be different, so I chose setup.inf. Can anyone give a definitive answer on what this

You have NT on a single NTFS partition, and want to install dos. How do you do it, select one:

a) Rollback.exe nstall MS_DOS

b) Convert

c) Sys.com and delete all NT files

d) Use Fdisk to remove partitons and install DOS

Answer (c) sounds good, but dosen't say install MS-DOS, so I choose

(d) , this however would be wrong if there were and extended partitions

A user prints Invoices and has a paper jam , his application can not reprint the invoices, how does he do it

a) Select Resume Printer

b) Select Restart Printer

c) Cancel doc and resume printer

d) Cancel doc and restart printer

Answer (b) as this will restart the job , rather than just carry on.

On domain there is a system policy and user profiles. There are conflicts between the two. Which takes precednce:

System Policy

A question about how to run a TSR ( Terminate and stay resident) program that needs to communicate with other MS-DOS apps to control COM port I/0 requests where do you run it.

If it needs to communicate with the other DOS applications it will need to run in the same shared memory address.

I had two very similar questions, and can't remeber the difference between the two, here it is:

You want to use performance monitor on network activity, which protocol or service do you install

a) Streams Enviroment

b) SAP Agent

c) Network Monitior

d) NWLINK

e) PPTP

I went for network monitor as its the only one that made any sense to me. d & e are red herrings. I never heard of Stream and Sap agents, they never been covered in any books. I got 100% for Mointoring & Otimisation , so I think I was right

You want to upgrade from 3.51 to NT4.0, currently you have HPFS:

Create UDF for computer specific information

Use windiff for installing applications

Answer: Required result met and one optional.

Next question the same, solution the same but instead of windiff, sysdiff is used for install application

Answer: Proposal meets required and optional results.

Create a UDF for user account stuff

A question about mandatory profiles on PDC, PDC goes down, how does user log on.

Answer: If this is the first time he has ever logged on he will not be able to. However, if he has logged on before the answer is still he can not logon, in reality this is not true, see following from a user forum:

If the PDC holding the Mandatory User Profile is down when Joe logs can he logon or not?

Well it appears he could but he's not supposed to be able to.

1. You have a machine with Windows 3.51 on it which also has the Shell

Preview. You want to upgrade to Windows NT 4.0. What steps should you

take?

1.Remove the Shell Preview first and then upgrade to Windows NT 4.0

2.The Shell Preview will not interfere: Directly upgrade to Windows NT 4.0

3.Cannot upgrade: Install Windows NT 4.0 over Windows NT3.51

4.Run Shell Postview and then upgrade to Windows NT 4.0

During the process of upgrading from Windows NT 3.51 to Windows NT 4.0, the first step that the Windows NT Setup wizard will perform is:

1.Gather information about your computer

2.Verify information about your computer

3.Upgrade the hard disk driver

4.Upgrade the network services

You want to upgrade a machine that currently has Windows NT 3.51 to Windows NT 4.0. What command would you enter at a command prompt?

1.winnt

2.winnt32

3.upgrade

4.winnt /u

The utility winnt32.exe has now in Windows NT 4.0 two new switches, one of which is the /s switch. What does the following do?

Winnt32 /s:\\venus\folder1 /s:\\mars\folder1

  1. Specifies that the source files to install Windows NT are to obtained concurrently from two servers, namely venus and mars.
  2. Specifies that Windows NT will be installed using striping with parity across volumes venus and mars.
  3. Specifies that the source files to upgrade Windows NT are to obtained concurrently from two servers, namely venus and mars.
  4. Specifies that the source files to upgrade Windows NT should be obtained from the server venus and, in case of failure, the process should resort to mars.

The /s switch does not work with winnt.exe because:

  1. winnt.exe is not multithreaded
  2. winnt.exe does not support Win32s
  3. winnt.exe does not support setup fault-tolerance
  4. /s is used only to upgrade from 3.51 to 4.0 (not to install 4.0)

You are about to install Windows NT 4.0 but want to generate a file to keep a log of file copy errors. What command would you enter and what file would be created if file copy errors were to occur?

  2. I would enter winnt /l and the log file would be $win_nt$.log
  3. I would enter winnt /f and the log file would be $win_nt$.log
  4. Cannot do it: The installation utility cannot log this kind of errors

What file system Windows NT 4.0 no longer supports?

1.HPFS

2.FAT

3.VFAT

4.(2) and (3) above

One of your customers informs you that she has a hard disk which is formatted as HPFS and that needs to be accessed by both an OS/2 client and a Windows NT client. What would you recommend to the client?

  1. Leave it as is
  2. Convert it to NTFS
  3. Convert it to FAT
  4. Cannot pass a recommendation unless more information regarding the usage of the files in the drive is obtained

Which of the following upgrade scenarios is not possible?

  1. Upgrade a Windows NT Worksation 3.51 to a Windows NT Server 4.0 member server
  2. Upgrade a Windows NT Server 3.51 PDC to a Windows NT Server 4.0 PDC
  3. Upgrade a Windows NT Server 3.51 PDC to a Windows NT Server 4.0 member server
  4. Upgrade a Windows NT Server 3.51 member server to a Windows NT Server 4.0 PDC

Which of the following services are disabled during an upgrade to Windows NT 4.0?

1.DHCP

2.NetDDE

3.Netlogon

4.Telnet

5.All of the above

As a computer consultant you need to install Windows NT 4.0 on several machines and you would like to do this as an "unattended installation" while you take care of other important businesses (like having lunch!).

What will allow you to do this?

Create an unattend.txt file for each computer

Use the /udf switch to replace per-computer sections in a UDF file

Don't bother: As with 3.51, version 4.0 cannot perform unattended installations

The Windows NT upgrade process can also be used to upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows NT 4.0.

1.True

2.False

What is the difference between the files Winnt.sif and $winnt$.inf?

  1. Both contain information as to how the setup or upgrade process is to be performed but while Winnt.sif pertains to the text mode portion of Setup, $winnt$.inf pertains to its graphical portion
  2. Both contain information as to how the setup or upgrade process is to be performed but while Winnt.sif contains system information (e.g, Windows NT build number),$winnt$.inf contains hardware information (e.g., CPU type)
  3. Winnt.sif logs system errors during Setup while $winnt$.inf logs network errors
  4. Both contain Registry-related information: Winnt.sif keeps security-related information (e.g., names of local accounts) while $winnt$.inf keeps system-related information (e.g.,name of Windows NT's system directory)

1.True

2.False

You are trying to install Windows NT 4.0 but you keep running out of free disk space although Setup reports there is sufficient disk space. What could be the cause?

  1. Setup does not take into account sector size. Hence, it may think there is enough free disk space when in reality there may not be
  2. Setup does not check for free disk space: It always assumes there is enough for an installation
  3. Setup may detect there is not enough free disk space but there is a known bug in it that makes it report the opposite
  4. Setup may detect there is enough free disk space but, to make your life miserable, it purposely states the opposite

What could be the result of the following message on a "blue screen" after an upgrade?

Invalid_kernel_handle

  1. An incompatible version of Windows NT was used
  2. Some third-party services and drivers were not disabled prior to the upgrade process
  3. A hardware component not in the HCL was present
  4. The file kernel.dll was not copied properly during the text mode portion of Setup

What components listed below have been moved to kernel mode in Windows NT 4.0?

1.Window Manager

2.POSIX

3.I/O Manager

4.DGI

1.Some graphics-related API calls have changed

2.Graphics-oriented tasks are more responsive

3.Security has been enhanced from C-2 to B

4.D Pinball runs fine now

5.New video drivers are required for Windows NT 4.0

You are acting as a consultant for a company that has a certain number of notebook users. These users take their Pentium-based notebooks home or when on the road. When at the office, they attach the notebooks to docking stations. The notebooks must be able to determine the hardware attached to them and they must also have NTFS security. What would be a good way to implement this?

Install Windows 95 on the notebooks and let Plug and Play do the rest

Install Windows NT on the notebooks and let Plug and Play do the rest

Install Windows NT on the notebooks and let hardware profiles do the rest

Install Windows NT on the notebooks and let system profiles do the rest

Can't do anything sensible: This is a hopeless situation

When launched, the Devices utility in the Control Panel displays a dialog box listing devices and their status. The dialog box has a button labeled "HW Profiles..." What functions listed below are provided by this button? (Select all that apply.)

  1. To enable or disable the selected driver for each hardware profile on the computer
  2. To determine if the selected driver is enabled or disabled for a hardware profile on the computer
  3. To enable or disable several device drivers simultaneously for a hardware profile on the computer
  4. None of the above

You click the Services icon in Control Panel or enter "net start" at a command prompt, and they each show that all network services as started. However, when you try to access the network, you receive error messages implying that a network service failed during startup. What could be a likely cause?

  1. The network interface card (NIC) in the machine is missing
  2. You started Windows NT with a hardware profile which disables the Server service
  3. You started Windows NT with a network-disabled hardware profile
  4. You started Windows NT with a hardware profile which sets the startup option for all network services to "Manual"

You have a folder with 1,000 files that you intend to copy to a floppy disk. Windows NT Explorer displays each file as being 1K in size. To your surprise all the files fit in a 360K disk! How can this be?

  1. They files are actually far smaller than 1K (say, 10 bytes each) yet Windows NT Explorer rounds file sizes to the full kilobyte
  2. Windows NT can store 1MB of data on a 360K disk
  3. The floppy disk is formatted as NTFS which allows Windows NT to store 1MB of data on a "360K" disk
  4. None of the above applies
