Surprized.

Took the 4.0 Server exam today and flunked. Got caught off guard on several areas. First of all, make sure you have a good understanding on NTWorkstation on the network, especially using the workstation to monitor multiple servers on the network.

Also go hit with lots of questions on TCPIP and routing.

Final area that surprized me was the number of questions concerning MSDOS workstations.

Guess what caught me off guard was guessing what would be covered on the server test vrs the enterprize test

Hope this helps.

I took the exam the 14th of February. Here are some topics you should know for this exam:

1) How many disk controllers and HD are required for implementing a stipe set with parity?

2) like above but for implementing disk duplexing

3) You have a network with an NT server, some Nt workstations and some Windows95 workstations. The backup policy is to backup the server every night and backup all the data in the workstations once a week. What is the minimun Hardware requirement for implementing this policy?

- One tape on the server or

- One tape on the server an one tape in the Nt workstation

- One tape on a Windows 95 workstation and a tape in an Nt workstation

or..... (I can remember precisely the options but this will give you an idea about the question)

4) ras connections fails. How to troubleshoot a ras connection.

device.log file should be created changing the registry

5) Know about AUTODIAL capabilities

6) You have an NT RAS server. You have two kind os RAS clients accesing the server:

- The first group: Windows nT workstations

- The second group: Computer with other Operating system with a Third party PPP slip protocol implementation.(No encription supported)

How can you configure the RAS server for using encription when an NT Ras workstation dials in and for skipping the encriprion process when a user of the second group dials in to the RAS server.( my Idea: 2 Com access to the server. in one encription supporetd in the second encription disabled)

6) The bootable partition fails. How to create a boot diskette for booting the system to the mirror partition. can this diskette be formatted with Dos?. You should know the ARC naming convention. Be carefull if the SCSI bios enable or disable about using MULTI or SCSI in the boot.ini file

7) Upgrating NT 3.51 into NT 4.0. You want to keep all the previous account information. In which directory you must install NT 4.0?

8)You have lost the installation diskette. How to recreate them. Be aware when you can use WINNT.EXE or WINNT32.EXE

9) Can workstation that only have the netware client access an NT server?

10) You have an TCP/IP network. There is one group of people that need access to a very heavy application on the server. When they do so the network slows down. How can you solve the problem?. ( My hint: create a new segment, add a second network card, eneble IP routing, then connect all the heavy users to the same segment)

These questions would complent the suggestions already posted in this forum. i hope they will help you to prepare for the exam.

Sorry for any gramatical mistakes.

Gervasio, thank you for the tips. I took the server exam on Friday and, to my surprised, passed (784). I saw a lot of RAS, Netware and Performance Monitor questions. This is the first test that I take and, like everyone else, feel that the questions can be a bit confusing. I FOUND THE TRANSCENDER EXAMS TO BE A GREAT RESOURCE --WELL WORTH THE MONEY! Good luck to everyone who is taking the test. Below are a few tips:

  1. Performance Monitor (Diskperf.exe; counters, etc.). Chart, Log, Report, etc.
  2. RAS, Phonebooks, Configuring RAS Server Network Settings.
  3. Interoperating with Novel NetWare (What's needed for a direct connection of an NT Workstation to Novell Server; Netware client to NT Server, Windows 3.1 client to Novell server?)
  4. What tools do you use to manage file/folder permissions on an NT Server from (a) NT Workstation and (b) Win95 client?
  5. Replication (Export/Import).
  6. Alerts and Administrative Alerts.
  7. ARC Names (renaming the boot.ini to point to the right place if you have a mirror and the disk fails). Know the difference between scsi and multi; know partition numbering.
  8. Fault Tolerance (Mirror, Stripe Set with Parity).

Again, thanks to all who have taken the time to post your thoughts, ideas and tips--I find myself returning to the forums again and again.

Enough advertisement . . . you probably want to know what was covered in the exam. Lots of RAS and Netware integration/Migration questions -- including frame-type troubleshooting.

  1. Performance Monitoring (better know your objects and counters inside-and-out) and memory/disk optimization were also emphasized.
  2. Import/export replication was also asked, primarily types of export and import computers.
  3. Remote Windows 95 installation from the network (NT Server) was also asked -- how would you install Windows 95 from the NT Server CD-ROM. I think I missed that one.
  4. Printer pooling and print redirect questions too.
  5. The Boot process and ARC naming convention in the BOOT.INI were also asked.
  6. Lots of RAS questions again -- especially remote client support aspects under multiple protocol/multiple application conditions.
  7. RAS "dialer.log" was asked -- how to invoke it (via Registry entry, not Control Panel) and where the log is stored (\winnt_root\system32\ras).

Subject: A big Thank You and a couple tips

I passed 70-67 last week with a 945, thanks to all who posted their tips here. After reviewing all the tips on this site (plus using Sybex study guides) I didn't see anything that I was totally unprepared for. A few additions to the list (sorry I don't remember more details):

* RAS was BIG on my exam - know how to configure it

* Understand the difference between the System, Processor, and Process objects of performance monitor

* I remember thinking that I had to know a lot about various clients (NT Workstation, Win 95, WfW 3.11, DOS) but I don't remember specifics

Good luck, and if you are interested in my good used study guides, email me directly.

I can say that there are three areas that you need to know hands down. RAS, NetWare connectivity, Disk fault tolerance

Having taken the test twice I would say that a full 70 to 80 % of the questions fall under these topics. Directory replication and global Vs Local groups a distant 4th and 5th. And a smattering of questions on protocols, permissions, and troubleshooting and performance monitoring.

Here follows my impressions of the exam in general terms since I can't tell you the actual questions since I signed a form saying I wouldn't and I can't remember the exact details anyway.

Above all if you know the product really well you should be OK, since a lot of the questions seem to be trying to find out if you know not only what to do but which tool to use to do it with. Quite a nice practical slant to it I thought.

There were also questions on what to use when you have a failure. Know what all of the Emergency tools are Repair disk, last known good ,etc.

To study I used this list to follow all the discussion. Very helpful. I studied the Concepts and Planning Guide that came with the product and the Resource Guide and Networking Supplement. I also had Drew Haywood's book about NT 4.0 which I found very useful for a different perspective and explanations. All in all I found the exam a lot easier than the Windows 95 exam, perhaps because I had more idea of what to look for and what I was up against.

Re: Server/Workstation service How to disable logics to do maintenance (or something like that)

the answer was to STOP Servers services. This stops a user from logging in ((question dealt with stopping users from authenticating or using a PDC when upgrading a BDC-PDC))

  1. NT Server had a TON of RAS and printing. Much more than I expected. Networking got hit HARD. As did integrating with Novell and Mac services.
  2. Trust relationships got emphasized also. I got a little bit of replication and a little bit of when to use what domain model. (follow Microsofts numbers and guidelines for domain models carefully, not real world experience)
  3. Look hard at internetworking Mac, NT, UNIX and Novell. I got several questions that tied three of the four into a single scenario. Know when to use DLC vs TCP Printing Services. Know ALL of the possible protocol combinations via RAS and what you can access once you are on the network given a particular protocol.
  4. Trust relationships? In the words of my NT Server instuctor, "don't answer the question, follow the Microsoft model." The model says, "local users go into global groups which go into local groups where they get their permissions." Live it, learn it, eat it, breath it, be it! Forget all about answering the questions, just follow the model.
  5. Also, make sure you know about optimization, and the Performance Monitor! And if you don't know about printing, and NetWare, read now! I did, and it paid of hugely!
  6. Make sure that you have a good understanding of the domain models, trust relationships, and user accounts on a domain (and what those accounts would have access to in a trusted environment.)
  7. Know the basics of replication governor, which side enlargens the buffer and which side sets the frequency
  8. Know when to use the emergency repair disk as opposed to last know good configuration
  9. Know RAS like your best friend. I got about six questions related to RAS.
  10. How do you remedy a stalled printer?
  11. Printer jams. When cleared, how do you restart the print document?
  12. 10 Q's on fault tolerance. 7 Q's on netware. 15 Q's on user rights
  13. How do you convert a NTFS partition to FAT? FAT to NTFS?
  14. What is retained when copying from NTFS to FAT? Permissions? Long File Name?
  15. How you restore files when 2 disks die with disk striping with parity?
  16. How do you restore the registry when the system disk dies?
  17. How do you restore strpiing with parity after system disk dies?
  18. How do you upgrade a member server to a BDC/PDC? PDC/BDC to member server?
  19. How do you upgrade a workgroup to a domain when you get your first PDC?
  20. How do you move a PDC from one domain to a BDC in another domain?
  21. User in global group is granted access to folder in trusting domain. Global group is a member of local group in trusting domain w/ change rights to an NTFS folder. Global group is granted read permission to the NTFS folder, and read share permission. Which rights are retained?
  22. A computer is setup as a TCP/IP router. What needs setup on it to route requests for a DHCP server on one subnet to a DHCP agent on another?
  23. If you forgot to create installation diskettes, but created an emergency boot disk, how would you use the emergency boot disk?
  24. How do you reduce traffic from PDC to BDC on the PDC? Increase Pulse or Pulse Concurrency in the registry?
  25. What program do you use to read *.dmp files?
  26. In Performance monitor, What do you set to run a test on a multi-processor computer to test all processor's?
  27. What fault tolerance uses 2 hd's and 2 hard drive controllers?
  28. What disk setup for 6 disks would be the fastest?
  29. How do you recover from 2 disk failure with disk strpiing w/ parity? 1 disk failure?
  30. How do you recover from disk mirroring?
  31. Lots of trust questions!
  32. 4 netware questions
  33. How do you access a NT Server from netware workstations?
  34. What user do you add to novell for gateway services?
  35. what do you add to client workstations after novell to nt migration?
  36. Users want to login via RAS. Need secure encryption for passwords and data sending. What encryption would you use?

Server

I asked these same questions the day before I took and finally passed the NT 4.0 server exam: Here are the answers I received from our Microsoft Certified Instructor - By the way, they WILL be on the test! And also, please let me know if you receive conflicting responses because I didn't do as well as I'd hoped and am still uncertain about a few of these... (thanks and good luck!)

>

>1. Can NT40 use NT3.51printerdrivers, and vice versa ?`Why (not)? No - they
>require their own set of drivers. I don't know why - just because.

>2. How can you connect to multiple RASsites, UNC or drive mapping ? - This
>involves autodialing. The autodial feature in RAS enables drive mapping and
>automatic connection to a program/file via dial-up, and you can also
>accomplish it from a DOS prompt and a UNC pathname.

>3. Connecting to a Netware server through a RAS Server. What do I
>need ? (RIP, NWLINK, SAP).... Depending on the specific question, this is most
>likely going to be RIP.

>4. How can I manage printersecurity on a NT Server through a WIn95
>workstation ? Servermanager handles only shares ? Also depends on the specific
>wording of the question, but I reduced it to either server manager or Explorer
>and my instructor said Server Manager...

>5. Where do you install SMTP for monitoring TCP/IP traffic. On
>monitoring PC or PC to be monitored ? This one is most definitely on the PC
>TO BE MONITORED. The exam asks about the SMTP Service, however, and it was
>unclear to me if that is the same as the SMTP Agent referred to in New Riders.
>I assumed they were the same thing.

>6. RAS, channel bundling, call back: does the RASserver dial
>simultaneous or one by one? Why? The RAS server can only call back on one
>line because you can only configure call back on one phone number. You can
>only use multilink under these circumstances if you have an ISDN line with
>multiple channels.

>7. You manage 4 NTServer from your NT Workstation and want to be
>alerted, if one of them has less than 25% free diskspace. Which steps
>are necessary ? You set up an alert in Performance Monitor.

>8.How can I detect too much paging with the Performancemonitor ?
>Steps ? Check pages/sec counter. If it's higher than 2, you've got a problem.

>9. Can a WIN95 Workstation import Replication ? NO, NO, and NO Only NT
>Workstation, NT Server, and Lan Manager can import

>10. Extending a Volumeset ? Data lost, how to ? You can only extend it if
>it's NTFS. If you delete a volume set, you've eliminated all the data. No
>recovery.
