First, I would like to thank everyone on the list for sharing their experiences. It is a tremendous benefit to be able gain some insight into a particular testing environment.

I use NT daily and have a box setup at home and I would recommend to anyone taking the NT 4 exams to expose yourself to the software and practice. You will learn a great deal. In addition, I used the SYBEX text and the Transcender test (absolute bargain in my opinion) to augment my study. The actual MS text looked quite a bit like the Transcender exams.

On to the exam:

Know the differences between local and global groups. There were a few questions pertaining to remote admin. of groups with member servers. For example, creating a global group and adding it to the local of a member server to allow for remote admin.

Many folks talked about RAS but I did not feel that it was that intense. Most was pretty basic. Now the various authentication methods -- PAP, MS-CHAP, CHAP. Know what selection to make with third party encryption tools. The only "tricky" question was one regarding a Windows Sockets API and configuring TCP/IP for SLIP.

For those not familiar with TCP/IP there were a few questions on DHCP and basic TCP/IP client configuration.

Know when to select Balance, Maximize Memory, Maximize Throughput for File Sharing, and Maximize for Apps.

NTFS permissions - remember that when you copy a file it inherit target folder's permissions - does not matter if it is on same partition or not.

When you move a file within same partition you are simply changing the pointer so it retain original permissions.

Become quite familiar with configuring Printers. Printer pools and how they work. Know what function the spooler performs - when print jobs are sent to a printer that is set to operate during set hours and it is unavailable the job is saved in the spooler until the printing device comes online. Know how to redirect a printer.

Know what function the pagefile serves, where to locate for optimization, how to optimize, how you know when there is excessive paging on your server.

Performance Monitor - a few questions on setting up alerts and some of the indicators. Know how to enable the disk monitor which are disabled by default. Here was a question...You are monitoring 8 servers with five monitors for each server with alerts set to report on activity every 5 seconds, and many of your PC's functions are running rather slow. How do you improve you PCs performance. ANS: Set the alert for a greater interval like every 2 minutes.

Troubleshooting - Know some of the error messages the could occur. There was a question about what error message you receive when your boot.ini is corrupt or missing.

Good luck to all.

Please DON'T take this the wrong way, BUT.

It was nice of you to post the answers you got wrong as an example to us all of the way Microsoft write their questions. All these questions I experienced in my exam and I list the correct answers below highlighted with a "!!!!!

Hope this helps

Bye for now.

Just passed with 800, oh well its a pass:

1. You have 4 SCSI 2GB drives. You want fault tolerance. You want to be able to should one of them fail. You want to utilize disk space as best as possible (c)

a. disk mirror

b. stripe set

c. stripe w/parity !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

d. volume

2. You have 2 SCSI drives each with a 1GB partition with their own disk controllers. you want fault tolerance and you want to be able to continue to use one of the drives should they fail. (a)

a. volume set

b. disk duplexing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

c. stripe

d. stripe with parity

3. You have 2 Netware servers and 100 netware clients. You want to add an NT Server with SQL resources. You make the NT Server a member of the netware domain, then what? (a)

a. create a local group on the member server

place the users in a global group

place the global group into the local group

b. create a global grop on the member server

place the users in a local group

place the global group into the local group

c. create a local group on the domain

place the users in a global group

place the global group in a local group

d. etc... !!!!!!!!!!( none of the above..you only need NWlink)

4. You have a RAS Server in which clients of MS-DOS and Win95 call into. They have Client for MS Networks and NWLink installed. You have a Netware server. You want the clients to be able to access all resources on BOTH Netware and NT. what do you install on the NT Server? (d)

a. CSNW

b. NWLink

c. GSNW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

d. RIP

5. A printer has stopped working. It is connected to your NT Server. You want to move the queue print files to the network directory. How?

a. Network neighborhood..Copy files to the network printer pool

b. Network neighborhood..Move files to the network printer pool

c. Reconfigure ports of the NT Server printer to the UNC name !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

d. delete printer and reconfig ports through a UNC name

6. What file do you need for the boot.ini for SCSI? ntboot.sys

NTBOOTDD.SYS (If Bios Disabled)

7. What can be an export computer. NT Server ( !!!!!!! Correct !!!!!)

8. How do you connect a Win95 to a share on NT Server using the Admin Tools? Server Manager ( ????????????)

Only 4 NW Q what do you know...when you study it hard, MS changes it hahahah Oh well

1. You have NT Server computer. You install the client Network Admin Tools on your Win95 workstation. How can you remotely manage file and directory
permissions? Server Manager or Windows Explorer?

Use Server Manager

2. If you have two network cards, to be able to assign IP addresses, would you use DHCP or would you specify IP address manually?

Specify IP address manually

3. If Netware clients would like to use resources in your NT network would you use only NWlink IPX/SPX compatible protocol or Would you need NTGATEWAY?

NWlink IPX/SPX compatible protocol

4. In NT Server or Netware Server/ NTGATEWAY ACCOUNT OR GROUP?

You create NTGATEWAY group on Netware server and assign permissions to this group

5. How can a user be notified a print job finished? Do you have to put the user to the backup operators group?

Pause the printer and send a print job to a printer. Double-click on the print job and enter a user name in Notify

6.If you want to grant permission for a user to connect to a RAS server would you use User Manager for domains or use Remote Access Admin?

Use User Manager for domains

7.If someone delete a file accidentally, do they have to be in the Backup Operator or owner to be able to restore file from tape?

Usually you must be a Backup operator. If not you must be a member of the Backup operator to do backup/restore.

9.If print server fails how can you move print jobs to another server?

You assign to a local port pointing another network printer and provide the UNC path

10. If you want to speed up Network access (in ras users use Netbeui + TCP/IP) would you give priority to Netbeui or TCP?IP IN binding.

You can change the binding orders. Usually, you want to put the most frequently used protocol first

11. If you are installing an NT server from a DOS client what should you do exactly in the installation files are in shared directory?

You need to create a network installation startup disk to allow you to connect to the shared directory. Once you connect a shared directory, you can run WINNT to install NT Server.

12. If the server with mandatory user profiles is down, can user not logged on or can they use default user profiles?

Yes you still can logon. If you have a local profile on the hard disk, it will use that profile otherwise it defaults to the default profile. (BUT THIS IS DEFINITLY WRONG! YOU CANNOT LOG ON)

13. In stripe set with parity for 4 hard disk with each 100 mb, would you choose the option 400mb or 300mb? Why?

You would choose 400Mb because 300Mb store data and 100Mb store parity bits. But if the question asks how much you can store data then you must choose 300Mb.

14. If you are upgrading from 3.51, can you start from 3.51 and type winnt?

If you are upgrading from 3.51, you run WINNT32 not WINNT. WINNT is for WIN95 or DOS

15. Do you have to install SNMP to server or workstation?

Install on the server

Subject: MCSE Success on Exam 70-67

Well, I'm now half-way there...yesterday I passed the Server 4.0 exam (70-67) with an 854/1000, taking 70min to complete, including full review of all questions.

Specs on the exam are: 765 passing/55 questions/90 minutes

My Section Scores were as follows:

As you can see, the connectivity section killed me...(Netware and RAS, just like everyone had forewarned me of.)

I would say that 75% of the exam involved RAS, Netware, Disk Management, and Perf Monitoring. The rest were fairly easy general questions re: setup and boot disks, installing wrong video driver, permissions, users & groups, etc.

Here are some brief excerpts of the rather tricky questions I can recall from the exam, (pls post the correct answers if you know them).

1. You need to create the 3 setup disks. Do you format the floppy from a MS-DOS computer or a Windows NT computer? I chose MS-DOS computer.

2. You have a RAS Server setup on your network...there is a database on another server on this network...NT WS users need to access the database using encryption...however, other remote users need to access the network (not database and not encrypted). How do you setup encryption for the WS users?

a. Encryption per modem port
b. Encryption per user
c. Encryption on the database serve
d. ?

3. Directory Replication...which machines can be exporters and which can be importers?

Otherwise, I felt this exam was easier than the Workstation exam (70-73).

I plan to take the Server 4.0 Enterprise exam in 1-2 weeks while all of this material is fresh in my mind...followed by TCP/IP and IIS. (BTW, can anyone recommend whether I should take TCP/IP first or IIS?)

Regards,

YES!!!!! 836!!! =20

I am so glad that one is over. 3 down (Net Essentials, Win95, & NT =Server 4.0) 3 to go.On to the brain-dump.

No questions on License Manager.

No questions on IIS.

No questions on the Distributed File System, which bugged me since it is such a cool feature on NT.

As expected, Netware interoperability a biggie. Gateway Services for Netware (configuring), Client Services for Netware. Remember Gateway is installed on the server, Client services on the client.

If you have an NT server on a Netware network, with all Netware clients, all you need is the NWLink protocol on the NT server for connectivity between the NW clients and NT server.

Printing was moderate. Such as...You are installing an NP printer directly to the network (not on a server) and while trying to configure printer from NT printer you do not see the HP printer port. Why? No DLC protocol installed on the NT server.

What happens if you print to a printer that is only available later in the evening? Print job will be saved in the spooler until time comes when printer can be printed to.

What happens in a printer pool of two printers, when printer A's job jams. Does B finish it? NO!

RAS, RAS, RAS. RAS out the _ _ _. :) Know it! RAS security.

Clear-text, PAP, CHAP and MS-CHAP. These are authentication protocols.

MS-CHAP only for Microsoft clients dialing in, such as Win95 and other WinNT computers.

No questions on multilink.

No mention of PPTP, which is another COOL feature of NT.

SLIP vs PPP. Don't forget you cannot configure RAS to accept a connection using SLIP. Because of this you can't use SLIP to connect 2 computers using RAS.

Couple of questions on Replication. Nothing too strenuous. Just know you can't export from an NT workstation.
Export=> server.
Import=> server or workstation.

Security...You have a person you want to be able to log on locally to the server, and also be able to fully administer printing. I forget the other options, but the key to this question is the same key to most NT security... Groups. This should be a hold over from Workstation, but know the difference between Global and local groups.

Using Client Admin tools on NT Wks and Win95 machines. If you are using Client Admin tools on 95 machine and want to share a CD on server do you use Server Manager or Explorer? Answer is Explorer, believe it or not. Why? Read up on it. This is getting to long as it is. :)

Performance monitor was there. Know which counters are most often used in determining bottlenecks.

Subject: Re: MCSE some exam-questions on 70-67

1. Can NT40 use NT3.51 printerdrivers, and vice versa ?`Why (not)?

Cannot. NT3.51 drivers create the printjob up to the last bit. NT4-drivers only create the printjob with GDI-calls which the printing NT4-machine lets run. This costs less time to print documents on the application machine.

2. How can you connect to multiple RASsites, UNC or drive mapping ?

Don't know.

3. Connecting to a Netware server through a RAS Server. What do I need ? (RIP, NWLINK, SAP)....

Server: RAS, NWlink including RIP for IPX/SPX (take a look into the protocol, you see, it's there)

Client: RAS, MS-Client to connect to Server, Netwareclient

4. How can I manage printersecurity on a NT Server through a WIn95 workstation ? Servermanager handles only shares ?

Don't know.

5. Where do you install SMTP for monitoring TCP/IP traffic. On monitoring PC or PC to be monitored ?

Not SMTP (=Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). You will install SNMP (=Simple Network Management Protocol). SNMP is to be installed on the PC to be monitored when you need TCP/IP-data from it.

6. RAS, channel bundling, call back: does the RASserver dial simultaneous or one by one? Why?

7. You manage 4 NTServer from your NT Workstation and want to be alerted, if one of them has less than 25% free diskspace. Which steps are necessary ?

Let run performance monitor on your workstation, change to "view-warnings", add logical diskdrive - % disk free - C-drive - less than 25 - and monitor free space on the drives you wish to control.

Now go to performance monitor, options, warnings, send network-message - fill in your logon name or your computers netbiosname.
Warnings should be received by you now. If not start control-panel-messenger service on you workstation.

8. How can I detect too much paging with the Performancemonitor? Steps ?

Logical disk drive: avg. disk sec/transfer

multiplicated by

memory: pages/sec

< 10 is ok, larger means bottleneck from paging.

This question seems to be asked usually.

9. Can a WIN95 Workstation import Replication ?

No, only LAN-Manager2.1 (seems to be OS/2), but (important!) all NT-Machines (NT WS, BDC, PDC, Member Servers). Export only by member servers.

10. Extending a Volumeset ? Data lost, how to ?

No, no data lost. Made it today, so believe me ":-)
Disk Administrator, click on partition to be extended. Now hold CTRL and free partition and next: extend volumeset. Reboot. There will be something about CHKDSK on the blue screen and then it's done. No formatting needed.

Would you say that it is possible to use the NT 4.0 Resource kit as a substitute for the written manuals that come with NT server 4.0? I am not clear as to whether the NT 4.0 Server Resource Kit contains everything important pertaining to the exam or whether it lacks certain content that is present in the manuals but not the Resource kit. Looking at the Transcender NT server 4.0 exam prep tool I noticed that they seemed to use the NT 4.0 manuals as a reference but there was no mention of the NT 4.0 resource kit. In contrast thier WIN95 prep exams used the WIN95 resource kit almost exclusively.

Here are some tips I keep handy for people taking the NT Server 3.51 exam

- Heavy on Domains Trust relationships (combined with permissions, and group strategies)

- Loads on RAS (remember which protocols support sockets applications)

- Fair bit on user management/group management

- Fair bit on printing, UNIX printing, HPJet direct (know which protocol needed and how to setup); also, printer drivers for many platforms on one print server (how to set it up)

- Some Novell Netware related Qs

- Fair bit on client support: weak point for many people (know how to make a WFW, Windows NT clients to logon; also, MS Network client 3 or MS Dos Addon for WFW needed to connect a Win 3.1 client to NT - real mode stuff)

- Know what Wins, DHCP do (very high level - easyyyyyyy) and when to use each; elementary TCP/IP stuff

- Troubleshooting: a bit on ERD/LKG/Boot disk (when to use each one)

I thought that the NT Server 3.51 exam was quite easy as long as you study the right stuff.

Hi,

I've passed 3 exams toward the MCSE so far :) 3 to go !

I'd wanted to share a few questions which troubled me in this exam.

You add a SCSI + Network card, after starting NT 4.0 you get a message "Dependency service failed to start". Where can you find more information?

a) bootlog.txt

b)Device.log

c) Service Option in Control Panel

d) Event Viewer

You create a printer - network interface is an HP LaserJet print device. Print Manager 'Network Port' does not appear why?

a) Print device configured by another printer

b) DLC not installed

c) Print device not properly configured to use option i/o port

d) did not select HP Laser Jet compatible driver

Trouble printing - you do not have space on the system partition

a) Use NT explorer to drag spool directory

b) Change Properties - move spooler to free disk space

c) Change Printer Properties for each printer

d) Disk Admin extend system partition

You want to Tape backup of registry files of NT server

a) use Differential backup type

b) use backup from remote server

c) specify one file on the volume containing the registry

d) Stop Server Service

You change a group permission for a directory - but user still has not access. user can print on a resource

a) wrong password

b) change needs user to logoff and back on

c) not replicated yet.

Hopefully somebody can tell us the correct answers ;) !!

I just passed the NT 3.51 Server Exam with a 977.

I will post a more comprehensive memory dump in a few days, but here are some quick notes.

I was asked 2 questions on file permissions from an NTFS to a FAT. ( Thank you to Herb and everyone else who participated in that discussion thread a few weeks back!)

Know when to use DLC, NWLINK and GSNW and when not to.

I actually had 2 questions on AppleTalk, 1 w/Ethernet and the other on permissions. This surprised me since no one else I spoke to ever had any Apple questions.

Printing and RAS were very important! I had questions on both set-up of services and troubleshooting (Got 100% on both, by the way!)

Choosing the correct Domain Model was easy , but I have heard others got much harder questions than I did- just remember the Microsoft guidelines, particularly the number of users per each model.

Users into Global, Global into Local for permissions - keeping this mantra in my head gave me quick answers to at least 5 questions.

I used the excellent training program from Scholars.com, the SSK, the Resource Kit and extensive use of the product. Also, this list was a huge help. The Scholars.com program included the MCP Endeavor testing software which I made extensive use of and highly recommend.

One comment about Scholars.com: I always have to get the Resource Kit and the SSK for these tests, which they do not include. Some people may be able to get by without them, but I find the detail in both to be indispensable. Another note: I forced myself to use NT 3.51 as much as humanly possible on a daily basis - and I don't just mean for practice. It has been my primary OS for the last 3 months at work and at home. This may sound like a no-brainer to some, but I have never used NT prior to this and am supposed to be using W95 at work.

No breaks for me, Networking Essentials and NT 4.0 are next!

Thanks to everyone who participates in this list. After I passed the W95 test last year, I remember thinking how helpful a study group would have been. Now we have one on a world-wide scale!

Passed the 70-67 test yesterday

I had lots of RAS Questions regarding the following:

Using RAS Server: you are have Microsoft clients that can use encryption and you have third party PPP clients that can not. How do you set up the RAS server?

Lots on Disk administrator

I had some Exhibit Questions, one in particular was on Mirror disk that had failed and you need to make a fault tolerance boot disk, choose the correct ARC naming convention for the Exhibit.

Lots on fault tolerance for Striping with parity

Lots on Performance Monitor

Where to setup remote monitoring; from the target server/client or from your workstation?

Know your monitor objects for Memory, disks and processor (e.g. Pages/sec for memory)

Lots on NT Servers 4.0 built-in (GSNW, CSNW) and add-on (FPNW) Netware Services including Frame types with and without using the Netware Services

A question on Auditing: What happens when you have checked these particular auditing features and some one access these files?

I finally passsed the sonofabitch! 733 right on the money! A feeble pass, but I'll take it...

This was my fourth whack at 70-43 and let me tell you, I am so grateful to get this monkey off my back. So that's four down, and two more to go...

Brain Dump follows:

That's all for now folks! Thanks to the classmates at Praxis for moral support and to this list for tips, tricks and traps. You can teach an old dog new tricks! For our next trick...SQL!

Cheers!

David

Hello All!

I want to extend my thanks to everyone on this list for your thoughts, advice and suggestions. A week ago, I passed my first certification exam, Windows NT Workstation 3.51 with an 858 and this past Friday, I passed my second exam, NT Server 3.51 with a 933. I'm on my way to becoming an MCSE!

Since a couple of people have posted requests for advice on the Server exam, I've listed some things that seemed especially important or surprised me on the exam. This list is not intended to be all-encompassing. In my opinion, the best resource for an complete list of test topics can be found on the Microsoft Roadmap CD. If you know all the topics on the list, you'll do fine on the exam. Also, take the assessment - I had questions from the assessment on my exam!

1) Know your RAS! Know supported RAS dial-in and dial-out clients for both PPP and SLIP (Server is not supported as a SLIP dial-in). RAS security features were covered on the exam, especially encryption. Know that RAS has the ability to function as a NetBIOS gateway and know when it should be implemented as one. Know what protocols are supported under RAS. Know when to use MODEM.INF and know how to configure RAS logging (DEVICE.LOG)

2) Printing: Know the difference between create and connect. Understand what protocols are necessary in different network configurations and different platforms. On some of these questions, I actually drew out a diagram. Also know how to set up printer drivers. Know UNIX printing, HP, TCP/IP. Know how to set up a printer poola and add a printer to a printer pool.

2)Client support: On my exam I had a couple of questions on Windows for Workgroups - know how a WFW machine logs on to a domain. Understand client installations over a network. You need to know how to use the Network Client Administrator and which client software is provided with Server. Know the capabilities of the full redirector vs. the basic redirector.

3)Netware: Know that a slow network connection could be due to the wrong frame type. Know the difference between GSNW and CSNW. Know how to designate a preferred server and when it is necessary to configure an internal network number. Know how to configure GSNW.

6)Domains and Trusts: Expect lots of questions on these. I found that most of the basic trust questions were very straightforward if you knew the material - no tricks here. Know the four domain models and under what conditions each is used. Know that trusts are not transitive. Understand how Global groups and local groups work in a domain. Expect some questions that combine these concepts with permissions (this is where they get tricky). Map out diagrams of the questions.

7)Groups and permissions: Know what rights each of the built-in groups have. Understand how permissions on a file change when it is copied or moved. Know that when a user has both share and resource permissions, the most restrictive permissions take precedence (Local and group permissions are cumalitive) And again, understand Global and local groups. D.J. Keleman posted a mnemonic that I really liked. U.G.L.R. (Uglier): Users go into Global groups, Global groups go into Local groups and Local groups access Resources.

8)Disk resources: I had some real toughies here. Of course, know what happens to file permissions when moving files to FAT, HPFS and NTFS partitions. Understand fault tolerance. Know disk mirroring and duplexing, disk striping with and w/out parity and volume sets. Remember that when configuring disk striping, the largest possible volume is not necessarily going to use all the available free space (you may need to use three disks instead of the available four) When implementing a stripe set with parity, the usable amount of disk space is smaller than the total amount, since one disk must be used for the parity information (I believe this is why you need three disks for stiping with parity and only two are required for striping w/out parity - is this correct? Anybody know?)

9) Understand when to use the ERD and Last Known Good. Know what these can and cannot do. Know the ins and outs of using Rdisk. Know how to create an NT boot disk and when to use it. Also know NT backup and how the Registry can be backed up.

10)UPS:It needs special cabling. It uses a com port (serial). Interface voltages need to be configured positive or negative.

11)Networking: Know the various protocols and when they should be used. For TCP/IP, understand the basics of DHCP, WINS, HOSTS and LMHOSTS.

12)Macintoshes: They need the NTFS file system installed on each server they access. Know the basics of Services for Macintosh, file access, printing, etc. Know the difference between Localtalk and Appletalk.

13) ARC naming conventions and boot.ini - know and understand these. I had questions on this topic on both exams!

I hope this information is useful to people preparing for the test! If you have specific questions, feel free to email me.

Jayme
