NT 4.0 SERVER IN THE ENTERPRISE - 070-068
Grade: 921 for 51 questions. Last core test for me. I've passed 5 exams -
first time every time - using a method similar to the one below. It was not
an easy test in that it uses a different methodology than the other core
tests.
Self-Studied for 3 days for this test. But, I'm fortunate to work with an
inherited system with a number of convoluted domains and trusts and 20+
remote customer sites.
Do Not Attempt This Test unless you (1) have passed Server 4.0 and (2) have
worked with multiple domains (2 or more) either in a production or
simulated environment ... a bit of NetWare wouldn't hurt, either. Take a
couple of extra days and do the labs below.
Take this test LAST or NEXT TO LAST. It calls on real life experience
(unlike the textbook-only stuff on others). MSoft has built numerous
scenarios that must be read and analyzed with ALL facets of the curriculum
as possible factors.
HOW TO PASS FIRST TIME A TWELVE STEP APPROACH
(You Can Use A Similar Method For Other MS Exams)
1. Know the DOMAIN MODEL. Practice it on your PDC or BDC. Building
GLOBAL & LOCAL groups will convert theory to experience. You will see how
the two interact and know what can/cannot be done with each.
2. Know PERMISSIONS for SHARES & NTFS. Build some shares and place a few
directories in each. Give varied permissions to the local and global
groups you've built in #1. Then, put yourself in some groups and
experience how the permissions effect your access.
3. Set up some dummy accounts. Set profile options for them. Then, log
on using the various accounts. While you are at it, assign these accounts
to various groups and see what happens when they try to access various
resources.
4. Set up a printer and a printer pool -- You Don't Need 2 Printers. Use
the GENERIC/PRINT TO FILE printer to simulate duplicate printers, even if
you don't own one printer. Set printer permissions using groups from #1.
Set priorities for the groups. Play with spooling options and then send
your resume to the printer after each change.
5. Do you have 2 PCs and 2 modems (or a $10 null modem)? Set up RAS on
your server and dial in with the other. Play with various security options
in RAS and logon permissions in User Manager for Domains. Pay attention to
logon and data encryption options and settings.
6. Pop out to DOS, run DISKPERF -y & reboot. Then, when you come back, go
to USER MANAGER and set up auditing for FILE OBJECTS. Next, run PERF MON.
Set up a log to monitor disk access parameters. Use your other PC to grab
some files from your server. Go back and export your log to Excel and view
the resulting spreadsheet. Then, run a chart and pull the files back from
your workstation...watch the graph during the transfer.
7. Set up a DHCP server and a WINS server even if you have only 2 PCs.
This will be highly instructional for this test as well as the IP test.
Play with static naming some and build a scope. Although these are IP
issues, you'll better understand both services for both tests.
8. Use your study guide or a good book on registry hacks to view various
registry settings examined in the MOC. If you feel you need to and have
confidence in your knowledge, change some settings. Otherwise, just look
at the REAL thing. Get acquainted with where they are and what they look
like. While you are at it, use NOTEPAD to view your BOOT.INI file to see
what it looks like and how it works.
9. Use DISK ADMIN to build a real ERD. Boot with your Setup Disk set and
follow through a recovery procedure. STOP at the point of actually
allowing NT to change any data!
10. Use the TRANSCENDER tests. Using whatever study guide you prefer,
take TRANSCENDERs over and over. They serve 3 purposes: familiarization,
tutorial and confidence builder. Don't take this (or any) test until you
can pass all 3 or 4 sample test with a consistent 90% or higher.
11. Visit www.hardcoremcse.com. They have dynamite questions online and
explain a bullet-proof test taking strategy - it's the one I use. Their
tests are less expensive but they don't take plastic and are strictly mail
order (i.e., you send your order through the mail).
12. Don't be afraid to take a full 80 minutes to read and analyze the
questions on Enterprise (then review for 10). They are designed to
simulate real life by throwing a number of distractors at you. But, if you
have real experience, you can cut through the distractors (redundant
wording, double negatives, unrelated or useless information).
********************************************
Through a BS and a MA I never could remember individual questions- tests
passed were tests forgotten (not the material, just the tests).
But, if you perform the above mini-labs and use TRANSCENDER or HARD CORE
sample tests, you cannot fail. You might pass this test as a paper MCSE
but not the first time.
Experience is the ONLY teacher for this one!
