Test Name:IIS4.0

Test # 70-087

IIS4.0 was the last exam I needed to become an MCSE. I passed, scoring a little more than the required 727 points. I was lucky. I did not think a lot of the questions had much to do with Internet Information Server, or my knowledge thereof. Take my advice: if you want to pass this exam, use BraindumpHeaven and Cramsession. Forget about taking a course at an ATEC. What they teach you there will be of no help for passing the exam. Buy a Microsoft Press book. It's probably of not much use either, but it's a lot cheaper! Okay, I may be exaggerating just a little bit.

On to the questions. I'll list the possible answers that I can remember or that I think might be right. I do not guarantuee the answers listed are exactly the same as they were in the exam. I don't even guarantuee the questions are exactly the same as they were in the exam. And remember: don't trust the "right" answers you find anywhere on this site. But better spend your time on figuring out yourself what the answer is to the questions you find here, than on studying the Microsoft course material. Unless you are really interested in learning things about the product, and not so much in passing the exam that has the same name as the product...

Question: You administer several IIS servers, some are in Domain1, some are in Domain2. You want

to be able to administer all machines by their computer name (NetBIOS name), instead of by their host name. How can you do this? Choose 3

A. Make Domain1 trust Domain2

B. Make Domain2 trust Domain1

C. Make the Domain1\Administrator account a member of the Domain2\Domain Users group

D. Make the Domain1\Administrator account a member of the Domain2\Domain Admins group

E. Make the servers in Domain2 register to a WINS Server in Domain1

F. Configure the WINS Servers in Domain1 and Domain2 to be push-pull partners

My answer: Who cares? What idiot would want to do this? Some guy that works at the Microsoft Exam Department maybe?

Question: In IIS you assigned Execute permissions to the Script directory. What NTFS permissions must the user have for the Script directory?

A. Execute

B. Read

C.

D.

I think I chose Read permission.

Question: You move your CGI and ISAPI scripts to one directory, and assign execute permission to that directory. The ISAPI scripts run, but users complain the CGI scripts don't run. What must you do to correct this problem?

Answer:

Restart the WWW Service.

Question: You have a Virtual Server that has the same Home Directory as your Default Website. Users complain that when they try to connect to the Virtual Server, they connect to the Default Website instead. What must you do to correct the problem?

A. Assign a different Home Directory to your Virtual Server

B. Add a Host Header for your Virtual Server

C.

D.

I think there is a Home Directory conflict here. You would normally be warned by IIS when creating a duplicate Home Directory, but maybe different rules apply to people that make up questions for Microsoft Exams.

Question: You import log files regularly, and convert IP addresses to host names. You want to reduce import time and resolution time. What can you do?

A. decrease the TCPIPResolutionMaxTimeout parameter

B. increase the TCPIPResolutionMaxTimeout parameter

C. decrease the ..... parameter

D. increase the ..... parameter

I'm sorry. Can't remember the exact question or answers. The TCPIPResolutionMaxTimeout parameter was probably called something else too. Sorry to confuse you.

Question (and this is the exact phrasing): MIME settings for .doc files are saved in

A. The Registry

B. The Metabase

C.

D.

My answer: the Metabase. I was in doubt, because I don't know if NT itself has MIME settings too. If it does, those will be saved in the Registry. The question doesn't specify NT or IIS.

Question: What are causes for a 404 Not Found Message? Choose two

A. Errors in HTML code

B. Virtual Directory Configuration

C. Excessive network traffic

D.

I chose A. and B.

Question: When monitoring, you notice that the SMTP Local Retry Queue Lenght is 6 (on average, or usually, or something like that). How can you improve performance for the Service?

A. Decrease the Timeout value for the Local Retry Queue

B. Decrease the Timeout value for the Remote Retry Queue

C. Reduce the number of hops

D.

I remembered having seen this question on Braindump Heaven. I forgot what the answer was that the guy thought was right.

Question: Something with an NNTP virtual directory on a RAID5-array. What can you do to improve performance?

A. Put multiple Virtual Directories on a single RAID5-array

B. Put multiple Virtual Directories on multiple RAID5-arrays

C.

D.

Seen this question on Braindump too. One person claiming A. is the correct answer, somebody else saying it must be B. I would say B., because of load balancing effect for I/O process, which probably makes up for extra time needed to control multiple RAID5-arrays instead of just one.

Question: Users complain of slow access times for your Website. You discover this is because of heavy bandwidth usage. What can you do to shorten download times?

A. Add a second Network Adapter to your server

B. Increase the time out (connection time out?)

C.

D.

(Answers didn't mention HTTP keep-alives or editing Registry parameters).

Question: Your server hosts 200 Websites, all with the .com extension. You want to change the extension for all Websites to .edu. How can you do this with the least amount of effort?

A. Use Internet Service Manager

B. Use Scripting Host to edit the Server Binding parameters

C.

D.

I remember these answers because I thought it had to be one of these two. But it might have been one of the other two. I saw a similar question on Braindump, but with slightly different answers, including one about using VB-Script. That answer definitely was not listed in my exam.

Question: To limit the amount of disk space used by NNTP, you set the expiration policies for all of your news groups at once (or in the same window, or something along those lines): you set messages to expire after 7 days, and you set the disk space limit to 500 MB. What does this mean?

A. Messages older than 7 days will expire automatically. If a news group uses more than 500 MB disk space, its oldest messages will be removed

B. Messages older than 7 days will expire automatically. If all news groups together use more than 500 MB disk space, the oldest messages will be removed

C.

D.

After reading A I thought it had to be A. Then I read B. You can probably find the correct answer in your study material.

Of course I had 3 SQL 8004005000-or-some-number-like-that questions. I remember 2:

Question: Error blabla "Login Failed". What could be the cause?

A. The user has insufficient permissions to access the database

B. Because of a network revision SQL server no longer uses Named Pipes but (....) as the protocol.

C.

D.

Question: Error blabla "General Network error. Refer to your manual". What could be the cause?

A. Database was moved to a different server

B. Because of a network revision SQL server no longer uses Named Pipes but (....) as the protocol.

C.

D.

There were 8 simulations. Most of them not too difficult. I noticed most, or possibly all, sites in the simulator were stopped: Only the Start option was visible under the Action menu. However, none of the site names had (Stopped) behind them. Probably not to trick you, but because the simulator is not so good?

1. Prevent anonymous users from accessing your Website.

Action:

After unchecking anonymous access, no authentication method was left checked. Didn't know whether to check one of the other two authentication methods, or leave all checkboxes blank. The question said to prevent anonymous users from accessing. It didn't say anything about non-anonymous users having to be able to access your site.

2. Users can only see images in Root, not in your Virtual Directory called Images. You notice that one of the broken links refers to ..\Root\Images\Image1.gif. Correct the problem.

Action:

I removed the Virtual Directory Images (not the physical directory), because it can already be accessed, being a subdirectory of the Root-directory.

3. Limit the maximum number of connections to your FTP site

4. Minimize the number of open inactive sessions, without changing the connection timeout or the maximum number of connections.

Action:

Uncheck the HTTP Keep-Alives checkbox.

5. Create a Virtual Website

6. Change listing for FTP site to UNIX-Style

7. Make a Virtual Directory for scripts. Assign the right permissions.

8. Implement a new ISAPI filter

I hope this list of questions will help at least a few of you pass the exam. How can they expect anyone to pass an exam like this without cheating at least a little bit?

Good luck to all of you!

Thomas C.
